ROGER VARIAN'S Defoe is set to test his William Hill St Leger credentials in the Betfred Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury on Saturday.

Varian's colt has been progressive this season and notched up a hat-trick of wins this season in the Listed Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton a month ago.
