The opening day of York comes under the spotlight as Templegate gives you his best bets for the day

USE your Ed in the opener.
EDWARD LEWIS won twice over today’s five-furlong trip in the spring. He’s been undone by the draw on his last two starts and he’s copped a much better stall today.
Shamshon has a chance from the bottom of the weights. He blew the start at Ascot last time after a blindfold was removed late having previously won at Newmarket.
There’s plenty to like about him but his hold-up style is not ideal at this track.
Moviesta was fourth in the Group 1 Nunthorpe at this meeting four years ago. Last week’s fourth behind Washington DC also reads well and it doesn’t stretch the imagination far to see him running well.
Thesma was fifth in last year’s Nunthorpe but she’s yet to fire this season.
El Astronaute just held off A Momentofmadness at Goodwood three weeks ago. Both are in decent form but are edging up the weights.

REACH for the Sky in the Acomb.
There was a lot to like about the way LANSKY made a winning debut at Windsor last week.
After missing the break he moved into the race in good style and he had little trouble seeing off a more experienced rival with the pair well clear. He’s well-bred and looks up to this sort of level.
Dee Ex Bee was impressive on his debut. That was on soft ground at Goodwood and his trainer Mark Johnston has a strangely-poor record at this track.
Fleet Review is progressing well with a couple of wins at the Curragh recently.
But his trainer Aidan O’Brien hasn’t won this race since 2000 and he doesn’t tend to fire his better arrows at this prize.
I'm more worried about James Garfield. He should like the return to six furlongs after a respectable fourth behind top prospect Expert Eye in Goodwood’s Vintage Stakes.

ENJOY the Crack in the Great Voltigeur.
Derby third CRACKSMAN has had a nice break since failing by just a neck in the Irish version – when Douglas Macarthur was back in fifth - at the Curragh.
This year’s Epsom Classic was a long way from being a vintage year.
But it’s still the best form on offer and Cracksman was probably better than the bare result as he sat closer to the furious pace than the pair that finished in front of him.
After just four races John Gosden’s ace also has the potential to have improved a fair bit in his six weeks off the track.
Mirage Dancer is another likely improver. Sir Michael Stoute has won this prize a record seven times and this year’s hope has run three times.
But there’s no doubt he needs to take a sizeable step forward on his Hampton Court third and today’s longer trip is not sure to suit looking at his pedigree.
I prefer Khalidi at a bigger price. He makes his debut for Clive Cox having switched from Gosden
He was well beaten in the Derby but has since finished runner-up in both the King Edward VII Stakes and the Gordon Stakes.
Venice Beach – only 12th in the Derby is Ryan Moore’s pick from Aidan O’Brien’s trio but I’m not convinced he’s up to this job.

ULYSSES should give Sir Michael Stoute a record sixth Juddmonte International.
This is shaping up to be a cracking race but I fear the forecast morning rain could spoil the party.
There’s little doubt Ulysses would prefer it faster. Easier going blunts his fine turn of pace but he showed in the King George – when he was runner-up to star filly Enable – that he handles it.
Ulysses just got the better of Barney Roy in a thrilling battle up the Sandown hill in the Coral-Eclipse last month.
Given Barney Roy – winner of the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot – is yet to race on softer ground the weather forecast has to be a worry.
On the plus side the Flat track should suit Richard Hannon’s ace. If he does handle the ground he will have a great chance.
Churchill saw off Barney Roy in the 2,000 Guineas before running below par when his old rival took revenge at Royal Ascot.
He was predictably pulled out of the Sussex Stakes due to the downpours and conditions could again be a problem with him stepping up to 1m2f for the first time.
Shutter Speed lost her unbeaten record when fourth in the French Oaks but that was a fine effort from a wide draw. I wouldn’t be surprised to see her shake some of the colts up.
