I’VE got one eye on the future at Newmarket today.
I’m really looking forward to riding a couple of really nice colts making their racecourse debuts for David Simcock.
They’ll be middle-distance horses for next season and it will be good to see how they get on today.
The first one is Courtside (1.30). I’ve ridden him a few times on the gallops and he’s ready to start.
He should run well but I would’ve thought he could be a bit green. One of his half-brothers was a Group 2 winner so he’s well-bred.
There’s a few horses in there with strong form in the race so we’ll just have to see.
Supernova (3.15) is the other. He’s also well-bred and he’s been going nicely in his work. He’s very similar to Courtside – they’ve come through the same stages - and he’s ready to have his first run.
I’ve ridden him once at home and he goes well and his sire Intello has been having a few winners as the season has progressed.
It doesn’t look as strong as the first division so I think he’ll have a chance of being placed at least.

He’s a mile-and-a-quarter horse for next year so it’s important to get a race into these two-year-olds before the season is over.
Both of these are big horses so you’ve got to take your time, let them strengthen up throughout the summer and then get them racing at this time of year.
If you’re going into next year unraced you’re always playing catch-up – especially with colts.
If they’re potentially good horses it’s hard to get to the Classics or Ascot if they don’t run as two-year-olds. It’s a busy old afternoon for me with another five rides.
I’ve not ridden Clear Water (2.05) before but it’s usually worth keeping an eye on trainer Michael Wigham’s horses. I don’t ride much for him but I’ve had a few winners for him in the past.
Clear Water has won on the Rowley Mile course at Newmarket and that’s always a help.
Tomyris (2.40) is probably racing for third place in the big race of the day, the Sun Chariot Stakes. She needs to step up on all known form to be placed.
She’s been third in a couple of Group 3s and looks up against it with some classy fillies in the field. Roly Poly looks very strong after a couple of Group 1 wins and Persuasive is probably her danger.
There’s plenty of prizemoney up for grabs in the Tattersalls October Auction Stakes. I’m on Tember (3.50) for David Barron.
He’s started favourite on a few occasions in maidens up the north. He’s run alright but nothing special but he’s been gelded since his last run and he’s got blinkers on for the first time.
It’s a big pot so it’s worthwhile going and he’s got a little chance.
Soul Silver (4.25) is what she is. She’s been running in competitive three-year-old handicaps all year and this looks another tough race.
She doesn’t have many secrets from the handicapper but she goes there with an each-way shot.
White Chocolate (5.35) is a nice filly. She’s my best chance of the day.
I won on her last year on the Rowley Mile and the step up in trip will help her. A mile and a half will be no problem and she’s been consistent in her last few runs.
Her form’s probably levelled off a bit but her fourth at Glorious Goodwood is good. She goes there with a good chance.
It’s great to have picked up a ride in the world’s richest turf race — the Everest in Australia next Saturday.
I’ll be jetting off to ride Brave Smash in the £6million sprint. I’ve won for the owners before — let’s hope we can scoop the big ’un!
