Horse racing tips: Newmarket, York, Chepstow, Hexham and Kempton – Templegate’s betting preview for ITV’s racing on Saturday, October 14

Newmarket, York, Chepstow, Hexham and Kempton come under the spotlight as Templegate gives you his best bets for the day

KEW GARDENS is ready to bloom in the Zetland Stakes.

He won a Killarney maiden in August and hasn’t been disgraced in Group races. Stamina looks his strong suit so the step up to 1m2f should be right up his street.

Dee Ex Bee is another sure to be suited by this proper test. He slogged it out to win on heavy ground at Epsom last time and today’s faster ground has to be a slight concern.

I’m worried about the step up in distance for Westerland. He pulled in the early stages when scrambling home in a 1m Doncaster nursery last month and needs to settle better.

Rastrelli stepped up on his Brighton maiden win to land a Newmarket nursery last time. This is a tougher race but he is progressing.

GHAIYYATH should win race sponsors Godolphin some of its cash back.

He’s bred to be top class and he certainly has potential to reach that level judged on his impressive all-the-way maiden success over a mile last month.

The drop to seven furlongs is no problem and I reckon he’s the one to beat. Purser found all sorts of traffic problems behind smart Masar in the Solario Stakes.

He made no mistake in an all-weather novice race at Lingfield last time but I’ve a feeling he’ll be better over a mile.

Aidan O’Brien fires maiden winners Zabriskie and Flag Of Honour at this Group 3 prize but it’s worth noting he’s never won it. That suggests he runs his lesser juveniles in this race.

FOCUS on EXPERT EYE in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes. This Group 1 prize has been won by some great horses in recent years.

Churchill, Dawn Approach and New Approach all went on to Classic success and the greatest of them all Frankel signed off his juvenile season with Dewhurst glory.

Expert Eye looks worthy of following those names on to the roll of honour. He was a rare debut winner for Sir Michael Stoute at Newbury in June and he could hardly have been much more impressive in Goodwood’s Vintage Stakes.

Several winners have come out of the race – including Mill Reef hero James Garfield – so the form looks good enough. If he’s in that shape today he will win.

Emaraaty has done well in maidens. His Sandown debut fourth was hugely promising and he had little trouble winning from the front at Newbury last time. He looks smart.

US Navy Flag is probably the best of Aidan O’Brien’s four runners. He won the Middle Park last time but that didn’t look a strong Group 1.

Templegate's TV tips

1.50 Newmarket - Kew Gardens: 'Stamina looks his strong suit so the step up to 1m2f should be right up his street'

2.05 York - Big Country: 'I’m sure he’ll be suited by the return to a track where he’s got some great form'

2.25 Newmarket - Ghaiyyath: 'The drop to seven furlongs is no problem and I reckon he’s the one to beat'

2.40 York - Staxton: 'He’s not been disgraced despite things not going his way in Group 2 contests since'

3.00 Newmarket - Expert Eye: 'Could hardly have been much more impressive in Goodwood’s Vintage Stakes'

3.15 York - Mr Lupton: 'He’ll be much happier on today’s faster surface and he’s become well weighted'

3.40 Newmarket - Lagostovegas: 'I’m sure she’s still well weighted and there are few doubts about her stamina'

SPIN the wheel on LAGOSTOVEGAS in the Betfred Cesarewitch.

Irish trainer Willie Mullins is well used to snaffling big British jumps pots and there’s plenty of reasons to expect him to bag this valuable Flat prize.

My fancy has only had six runs since joining Mullins. She won at Killarney in July and followed up with a third to decent stablemate Whiskey Sour at the Galway Festival.

It’s been hurdles only since then and she’s won her last two races. I’m sure she’s still well weighted and there are few doubts about her stamina.

Alan King’s Who Dares Wins had Shrewd, Taws, Oceane and Arthur McBride behind when landing the Cesarewitch Trial last month.

He’s tough and stays well so must have a decent chance. The drying ground will help his stablemate Oceane but a wide draw is no help.

John Constable is a big danger. He’s developed into a smart hurdler this summer with big wins at Haydock and Market Rasen. It’s easy to think he’s well treated on the Flat.

YORK

2.05

I’M not losing faith in BIG COUNTRY.

His Cambridgeshire effort could have been a lot better but that was a strange race and I’m sure he’ll be suited by the return to a track where he’s got some great form.

Mick Appleby’s hope won over today’s course and distance in June and was unlucky not to land the John Smith’s Cup back here the following month.

Considering the runner-up Ballet Concerto has since won a couple of Group 3 races that form looks really good.

Chelsea Lad finished some way in front of Big Country when fourth in the Cambridgeshire. He’s threatened to win a race like this all season but he did disappoint at this track in August.

I’m more worried about Anythingtoday. Three-year-olds have a great record in this race and he ran well when third in a similar contest at Newbury last month.

2.40

TIM EASTERBY has landed this Listed prize twice in the last five years and it all Stax up to another win.

His STAXTON won twice earlier in the season and he’s not been disgraced despite things not going his way in Group 2 contests since.

I’m sure he’s up to this level and he chased home useful Hey Jonesy on his only previous visit to York.

Shabaaby is clearly the one to beat. But his impressive wins at Newmarket and Doncaster came on soft ground and it’s not hard to pick holes in the form of his seven-length win in a four-runner race last time.

William Haggas has a great record at this track. I prefer Island Drive over Barton Mills of his pair.

YOUNG jockey Sebastian Woods should grab a big win on MR LUPTON.

He’s impressed me in recent weeks and he’s on a horse who ran a cracker in the race put on at Haydock after the Ayr Gold Cup was abandoned.

His fourth in that contest was his first handicap run since winning at Newmarket in May. It was also on heavy ground and he’ll be much happier on today’s faster surface.

My fancy has spent much of the season racing in better races than this and he’s become well weighted.

Flying Pursuit did well to see off Nameitwhatyoulike at Ripon last time. He was probably on the wrong side that day but the draw hasn’t been particularly kind again.

Stake Acclaim, Teruntum Star and Eqtiraan have claims but course winner Al Qahwa could have done without the ground drying out.
