Horse racing tips: How to bet £10 on Saturday’s racing with Templegate’s Tenner
Fancy a bet on today's racing? Here's the best way to spend your tenner on the races!
IT’S 7,500 miles. Or 5,534 depending on whether you’re starting in Portugal or Nigeria.
That’s Lagostovegas, of course. But the only distance that matters today is the two-and-a-quarter miles from Cambridgeshire to Suffolk that makes up the Cesarewitch.
It’s a brutal race and only for those up for the battle. That’s part of the reason why jumps horses have such a good record in this Newmarket marathon.
Hurdlers like Big Easy and Grumeti have won this prize in recent years and I’m expecting Lagostovegas (3.40) to add her name to the roll of honour.
She’s only been with Irish maestro Willie Mullins since the spring. In that time she’s notched up a Flat win and two hurdles victories from six starts.
She moves like a horse who is still improving and Ryan Moore has been booked. I’m convinced she’s the one the rest need to beat.
Templegate's TV tips
1.50 Newmarket - Kew Gardens: 'Stamina looks his strong suit so the step up to 1m2f should be right up his street'
2.05 York - Big Country: 'I’m sure he’ll be suited by the return to a track where he’s got some great form'
2.25 Newmarket - Ghaiyyath: 'The drop to seven furlongs is no problem and I reckon he’s the one to beat'
2.40 York - Staxton: 'He’s not been disgraced despite things not going his way in Group 2 contests since'
3.00 Newmarket - Expert Eye: 'Could hardly have been much more impressive in Goodwood’s Vintage Stakes'
3.15 York - Mr Lupton: 'He’ll be much happier on today’s faster surface and he’s become well weighted'
3.40 Newmarket - Lagostovegas: 'I’m sure she’s still well weighted and there are few doubts about her stamina'
Expert Eye (3.00) looks top class in the Dewhurst but he’s going to be unbackable at odds-on.
The Autumn Stakes looks a bit tricky and I’ve plumped for Godolphin’s impressive maiden winner Ghaiyyath (2.25).
I’m with Aidan O’Brien’s Kew Gardens (1.50) in the Zetland Stakes but the action up at York attracts me much more.
Big Country (2.05) was a bit disappointing in the Cambridgeshire last time but it’s not hard to forgive a below-par run in that race.
I’m expecting him to bounce back to form at a track where he’s done well this season.
Templegate's tenner
- £3 win Mr Lupton
- £3 win Big Country
- £2 win Lagostovegas
- £1 each-way treble Mr Lupton, Big Country, Lagostovegas
He won over course and distance in June and was a little unlucky not to beat dual Group 3 winner Ballet Concerto in the John Smith’s Cup.
Staxton (2.40) is a bit speculative in the Rockingham but there are reasons to expect him to be up to this Listed level after things didn’t work out for him in Group 2 races.
The one I really fancy is Mr Lupton (3.15).

He’s won two of his last three starts in handicaps and he was a decent fourth last time on unsuitably testing ground in the Haydock race put on after the Ayr Gold Cup was abandoned.
One of those wins came over today’s track and trip and he’s nicely weighted – especially as decent apprentice jockey Sebastian Woods takes off an extra seven pounds.
