I’VE just the one ride today but it couldn’t be a much better one.

I’m off up to Wetherby to ride my old friend Coneygree in the Charlie Hall Chase.

He gave me a day you can only dream about when we won the Gold Cup a couple of years ago and it will be great to see him out on the track again.

He obviously missed last season’s Gold Cup but he ran a brilliant race when third behind Sizing John at the Punchestown Festival in April.

This will be his first run since but the one thing the Bradstocks are very good at is getting horses fit after a break.

The way they got Coneygree back for Punchestown was an incredible feat. He’s had no setbacks this time so it’s all good to go.

He was going to run in the Kerry National in September but the ground just went against us. So Mark and Sara have eased off him and brought him back for this race. He looks very fit, very well and it’s all systems go.

I’ve been going into the Bradstocks fairly regularly. At least once or twice a week I meet them up on their gallops and we do a bit of work and schooling.

They’ve had a lot of success and the individual attention they can give to each of their horses is key to their operation.

Coneygree gets ridden out twice a day and he gets all the attention he needs to keep him fit and healthy. The horses are very much treated like part of the family - they’re given first-class treatment.

They train at Letcombe Bassett just over the hill from Lambourn at some very historic stables.

It’s the same yard where Golden Miller – who won five Gold Cups and a Grand National in the 1930s - was trained. More recently Captain Tim Forster trained three National winners from there.

The Bradstocks have carried that big-race success on with Coneygree and before him Hennessy Gold Cup winner Carruthers.

That was where my link with them originally started. They wanted to take seven pounds off Carruthers when I was an amateur and we won two or three races including the West Wales National at Ffos Las.

They were very kind to show faith in me and put me up on him. That led to me getting the ride on Coneygree and it’s horses like him that can make you.

The Gold Cup win was a very special day. When you’re still a conditional it’s days like that you don’t believe are quite possible. It was a dream come true.

At the time it was very surreal. I rode in the ‘boys’ race an hour later so it was a bit of a whirlwind.

He propelled me into the limelight and – at the same time – gave me valuable big-race experience.

From what he’s been like at home recently he’s definitely got the feeling that he’s very well.

Whether he can be right back to his very best is another matter but he seems in good order and that’s all I can go on. Getting six pounds from Cue Card today is very helpful.

He’s a big imposing horse – very well built. He should love the ground as well and there’s no problem with the track.

He’s got incredibly long hind legs. It means he can transfer the power from his big engine but at the same time it can cause a bit of stress here and there.

He’s very similar to his half-brother Carruthers. They get out there, have a high cruising speed and they jump for fun.

I’m really looking forward to getting back on him.

Sunday is looking quite good as well.

Willoughby Court set for chase debut at Huntingdon

I’m on Willoughby Court (2.50) in the novices’ chase at Huntingdon.

He gave Ben Pauling his first Cheltenham Festival winner when landing the Neptune Investment Hurdle in March and makes his chase debut tomorrow.

It was an unexpected ride to come in for and I’m delighted to have got the call on such a nice horse.

He’s been doing everything right at home – schooling well and working well. Hopefully he can put up a good show and he’s bound to come on for the run. This is a nice starting point for him.

I also ride Equus Secretus (1.45) for Ben. He won an English point-to-point and is a really nice, big horse. Chasing will be his bag but, for now, he starts over hurdles and we’re hopeful of a good run.

Ben is a good friend. He was the first person I met when I turned up at Seven Barrows to work for Nicky Henderson.

He was his assistant back then and he’s had an incredible start to his career. He seems to be going from strength to strength and he’s getting more and more horses every year.

He’s a good guy and owners have a lot of fun with him.
