WILLIAM HAGGAS could have a Derby contender on his hands after Young Rascal overcome traffic problems to win the Chester Vase on day one of the Boodles May Festival at Chester.

James Doyle had to be patient on Young Rascal (10-3), who travelled best into the race but had to bide his tide and switch outside runners before going through with his effort.

He just got the better of the widest drawn horse in the race, Mark Johnston's Dee Ex Bee (12-1), in the straight.

Aidan O'Brien had won the previous five renewals of the race, but his favourite Hunting Horn (3-1) could only finish third.
