Invincible Army

JOIN the Army at Haydock.

INVINCIBLE ARMY was massively impressive when winning at Ascot on his comeback last time and can follow up in the Sandy Lane Stakes (3.25).

James Tate’s speedster didn’t look rusty after seven months off and pinged along nicely just behind the leaders until picking up inside the final furlong to win going away.

He had a bit more in the tank than the official margin of a length and a half as he stepped up on his already strong juvenile form.

Sometimes horses that have achieved a lot as a two-year-old fail to train-on but that’s clearly not the case here. He went close in the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes at York when he had to make up a lot of ground in the closing stages.

Sands Of Mali came out on top that day and it should be a good battle between the pair again. Richard Fahey’s runner has already tasted success as a three-year-old thanks to his Group 3 win at Chantilly last month.

The ground was soft there but he’s scored on quicker conditions and should be fine, just like Invincible Army.

The Temple Stakes at 4.00 looks all about superstar sprinter Battaash who ended last season by winning the prestigious Prix De L’Abbaye at the Arc meeting. He’s had a wind operation over the winter so he could even improve on what we’ve already seen.

But KACHY can give him a real race at a much bigger price.

He won an all-weather handicap at Lingfield in January with a performance that would have won many a Group contest.

He stepped up to take a Listed contest at the same track before not getting the run of the race in the all-weather finals on Good Friday.

Any idea that he’s an all-weather horse and nothing more were firmly put to bet when he cruised to victory on his turf comeback at Chester’s May meeting.

He just went from the front there and his rivals didn’t come close in a nine-length success. This is obviously a massive hike in class from that but he looks progressive at the age of five and will be hard to keep out of the frame.

Mabs Cross is another with a place shout. She battled home well to win the Palace House Stakes at Newmarket last time over this distance. She clocked a good time there and managed to make up a lot of ground in the closing stages. This is a deserved step up in class.

SOCIETY POWER looked a lot more than a handicapper when winning at Ascot last time and can follow up in Goodwood’s 2.30.

William Haggas’s three-year-old stepped up on his effort against two rivals at Wolverhampton that was little more than a gallop on comeback. That was left behind on the Queen’s course when he came from a poor position to end up winning going away.

Thanks to not being too flashy, the handicapper has hiked him a fair 6lb as he returns over the same trip and on similar ground.

Steve Mullen's top tips for Saturday

2.30 Goodwood - Society Power: 'Looked way better than a handicapper last time'

3.25 Haydock - Invincible Army: 'Had plenty left in the tank last time'

3.40 York - Carlton Frankie: 'This fast ground should be ideal'

4.00 Haydock - Kachy: 'Cruised to victory at Chester last time'

This looks a hot race and Fennaan is worth keeping an eye on. He was fourth behind Society Power last time and is possibly better suited over a mile.

Maverick Officer had to settle for second at Doncaster last time but was coming back from five months off. He let the winner get a bit too far in front before catching up towards the line. There should be more to come.

CARLTON FRANKIE improved on her first run back after a wind operation when third at York last time. She was beaten half a length there and looks right in the mix for the 3.40 on the Knavesmire.

The handicapper has given her a chance with a 1lb rise in the weights and this fast ground should be ideal from a good draw.
