Royal Ascot tips: Diamond Jubilee – your top pinstickers’ guide to the race

Steve Jones runs you through the contenders for the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot this Saturday

Harry Angel can end his Ascot hoodoo

THERE must be an Angel playing with my heart in the Diamond Jubilee.

Luckily, the head also says HARRY ANGEL has a great chance of breaking his Ascot hoodoo. All four of his defeats have come at this track from just four visits.

That’s not to say his track form isn’t good and I’ve no doubt he’s by some way the best 6f sprinter on these shores.

Bound For Nowhere 3/5

Fourth behind Caravaggio in last year’s Commonwealth Cup. Smashed smart Bucchero when last seen in April. Impossible to rule out with Wesley Ward doing the training.

City Light 2/5

City limits. This French raider has hit top form this year. Landed decent all-weather prize at Lingfield on Good Friday and gone in again since. Needs to up his game at this level.

D’bai 2/5

Bai won’t pay. Spent most of his career running over further and own over a mile at this track last summer. Put in personal best to win a 7f Group 3 two weeks ago but this is somewhat different.

Harry Angel 5/5

Prince Harry. Won five of his nine starts. Strangely all four of his defeats came at Ascot but they’ve all been good efforts. Bit unlucky in last year’s Commonwealth Cup and there was a lot to like about his comeback win at York. Clearly sets a decent standard.

Intelligence Cross 1/5

Lack of Intelliegence. Group 3 winner in his pomp but used as a pacemaker these days. Gave Merchant Navy a lead last time and that’s his job again today.

Librisa Breeze 3/5

Warm Breeze. Fair fourth in this race 12 months ago and went on to win the big Group 1 spring on Champions Day. That was on soft ground and it looks like conditions have gone against him.

Merchant Navy 4/5

Boat might well come in. Snapped up after winning at the top level in Australia. Made a winning debut for Aidan O’Brien last month and there looks like there’s plenty more to come. He’s the one I fear most.

Projection 2/5

Don’t go Pro. Both wins came as a two-year-old. Bit unlucky in last year’s Wokingham when first home on the stands’ side. Close third behind The Tin Man and D’bai at Windsor last time ad he needs plenty to go his way.

Redkirk Warrior 3/5

You’d have to be brave to back Warrior. Started life as a 1m2f horse before ending up sprinting in Australia. Narrowly won two Grade 1s this year – beating Merchant Navy in March – so has to be respected. Questions to answer even with Frankie in the saddle.

Sir Dancealot 3/5

Not a Lot. Had eight tries in Group races and yet to take home a pot. Merely ran to form when successful at Hamilton a couple of weeks ago. Place claims at best.

Spirit Of Valour 2/5

Mean Spirit. Only raced over further last season with sole win coming over 7f. Chased home stablemate Merchant Navy at the Curragh last month but unlikely to get so close this time.

The Tin Man 4/5

Tin with a shout. Loves this place as he showed when winning this race 12 months ago. Twice beaten behind Harry Angel later in the season and only did what he was entitled to do when scoring at Windsor last time. Might find it tougher defending his crown.
