Templegate’s horse racing tips: Newcastle and Newmarket live on ITV TODAY

Newcastle and Newmarket are both live on ITV today and Templegate has done the studying so you don't have to

NEWCASTLE

OK Yaar in this tough opener. EKHTIYAAR was only 11th at Newmarket last time but he was beaten less than two lengths and got blocked when coming with a decent run.

3

That was a decent effort and a repeat of it would put him in the shake-up.

He was an impressive big-field winner this time last year and is only 5lb higher in the weights today.

He has a decent draw and will hopefully break a bit smarter and avoid any traffic problems.

Shanghai Glory was another hard-luck story at Epsom last time when having to settle for third when still full of running. He relishes this distance and goes off the same mark today.

He has tasted success at Listed level and this is a slight drop in class from last time.

Golden Apollo is interesting dropping in distance after some good form at 7f.

He is well handicapped on his best form and has plenty of pace for this sprint trip.

Swift Approval is another to consider after a good run at Epsom last time.

It’s been a while since he won but he’s been in the frame at this level and the trip suits. He goes on this AW surface too.

YAFTA is the one they are all after. Richard Hannon’s progressive three-year-old is improving with every run and should relish this drop back to 6f.

He ran a good race over further at Newmarket last time from a poor draw.

He had earlier showed his liking for this distance by running away with a handicap at headquarters with plenty left in the tank.

He’s taking a step up in class here but looks ready for it and impresses with his battling attitude.

Aeolus is a standing dish over this trip and didn’t run a bad race on the Rowley Mile last time despite finishing 13th.

He showed his class at the same track two runs ago when he battled well to score over today’s trip.

This is a tougher assignment than he’s used to but he should figure.

Dream Of Dreams could well be the classiest horse in the race and he was entitled to need his comeback at Newmarket in April.

He’s been given another break since then but his form at Listed level last season marks him out as a big player in this. He has a good draw and Sir Michael Stoute’s horses are in fine fettle.

EUCHEN depend on Jim Goldie’s stayer. EUCHEN GLEN showed all his battling qualities when winning at Ayr last time out.

He travelled strongly through the race but had to dig deep to land the victory over a 1m5f trip that only just starts to bring his stamina into play.

He was going away at the line so he could be a couple of steps ahead of the handicapper.

He’s carrying a 5lb penalty for that success, which gives him every chance of following up.

There are dangers galore with 2016 winner Dannyday interesting. He’s raced just twice since that victory and has looked a little rusty on both starts that have come this season.

His effort in the Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting last time was decent enough and that extreme distance may have just stretched him too far.

We know he likes this track and it would be no shock to see him win this again.

The Grand Visir was impressive when winning at Haydock last time and a 4lb rise in the weights shouldn’t worry William Haggas’s stayer too much.

Mark Johnston throws a couple of darts at this and Dominating may be the pick.

He was beaten in a close finish at Carlisle last time and should relish this step up in distance.

TAKE it as Red in the Northumberland Plate. AMAZING RED put himself right in the picture for this race with an impressive win at Newmarket last time out.

Stepping up in distance should bring out the best in him because he didn’t look as though he was coming to the end of his tether at headquarters.

There’s no worry about him taking to the all-weather surface because he was a game winner at Kempton last month and the handicapper may be struggling to keep up with his progress.

Withhold has been well supported for this just as he was when winning the Cesarewitch last season.

He had one prep run before that success but is coming back from 259 days off here.

That is probably the only worry about him because we know he stays and has no problem with a big field.

Lagostovegas is dropping in distance after her classy win at Royal Ascot last time.

He will be strong at the finish, while last year’s winner Higher Power is another to consider.

He is only 1lb higher 12 months on and ticks all the boxes.

Because of the Withhold gamble there are some fancy prices on offer and Sir Chauvelin could run into the places.

He was unlucky at Royal Ascot and, while his best form is over shorter, he’s got plenty of stamina too.

IMPULSION was hugely impressive when storming home to win at Goodwood on debut last time out. She managed to dominate a fair maiden despite running green in the early stages.

It was a striking performance and there should be a lot more to come.

The only slight question mark is the ground today as it was on the testing side last time.

On pedigree there’s no reason why she won’t act on this quicker surface.

So Brave is another who caught the eye when winning on her first visit to the racecourse.

She wasn’t quite so impressive when scoring at Lingfield but she went from the front and kept producing more when needed.

Ellheidi had to settle for second on her debut at Haydock last time but it was still a good effort.

The penny dropped as the race went on and she crossed the line full of running. There should be more to come and the fast ground seemed to suit.

This is a decent race and Royal Intervention is another with a shout. She has been given a little break since an encouraging first run at Lingfield.

Gerald Mosse’s mount looked all over the winner there until being caught right on the line. She should have learned from that experience.

LAD’s not bad. LARCHMONT LAD may not have won the John Of Gaunt Stakes at Haydock last time but he couldn’t have done a lot more before going down by a neck.

The impressive part of the run was the way he battled back once headed by the useful D’Bai.

That showed his ability to strike at this Group 3 level for the first time in a couple of years.

Fast ground suits well and another bold bid is expected while he’s in this mood.

That John Of Gaunt is almost being re-run here with third home Tabarrak and fourth Dutch Connection also in the line-up.

There’s no reason why they should turn around the form with my fancy but they have chances of hitting the frame.

Another threat could come from Sir Dancealot. He’s taking a pretty sharp drop in class after running with credit in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot latest.

He won a little race at Hamilton before that and was on the podium the last time he ran at this level.

He's stepping up in distance from 6f for the first time since last season when he won over it at Doncaster.
