Newbury, Newmarket, Cartmel, Market Rasen, Ripon, Lingfield and Haydock come under the spotlight as Templegate gives you his best bets for the day

EMOTIONLESS can bring a smile to the face by winning this trappy contest.

Charlie Appleby’s five-year-old has few miles on the clock and was last seen finishing an excellent second in a Meydan Group 3 back in January.

That in turn was his first run in 10 months so we know he goes well fresh. This trip is ideal and he’s held his own a couple of times in much better races than this. Given how well the trainer’s horses are running, he should be fit enough to do the job here.

Desert Encounter would be more than good enough at his best but he’s been below par this season. His effort when last in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot last time was too bad to be true and is best ignored. He’s a Group-class horse who could bounce back.

KONCHOUS DECISION July Stakes runner-up Konchek to take on Glorious Goodwood assignment

Spark Plug is always popular and went close to landing a Listed win at Sandown last time out. He’s another who is ideally suited by this trip and will like the fast ground.

Autocratic ran his best race for a long time when a solid fourth in a similar race to this at Royal Ascot. In-form Sir Michael Stoute applies first-time headgear here which could help him to repeat that form. Emirates Flyer and Fajjaj are both taking a fair hike in grade and need to produce more.

SIR CHAUVELIN found the 1m2f of the John Smith’s Cup too short last time, particularly after they crawled along for most of the way. So it looks a wise move to step him back up to this 2m trip that saw him run an excellent third in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle in June. He is only 1lb higher in the weights and showed his liking for this fast ground when second in a hot handicap at Royal Ascot.

Coeur De Lion is coming the other way after a good run over 2m4f in the Ascot Stakes. He might have finished closer than sixth had he not been held up for too long. There’s likely to be plenty of pace on here and he wants that sort of gallop to make the most of his obvious stamina. The handicapper has left him alone which gives him every chance.

The presence of a Willie Mullins runner is always notable and his Stratum finished ahead of Coeur De Lion in that Ascot Stakes. The Irish maestro puts a hood on him for the first time which may help him settle. He’s certainly going to stay, that’s for sure.

Percy’s Word is a progressive stayer who went close over this trip at Kempton last time. This is a tougher assignment but he’s still learning over marathon trips.

Quloob is interesting after showing promise when fifth on his comeback at Newmarket last time. He’d been off almost a year before that and should see out this longer distance.

BACCHUS was very impressive when winning the Wokingham at Royal Ascot last time, pulling out more when needed to score by a neck. He deserves to step out of handicap company after that excellent effort and looks open to improvement given he was off nine months before that win. Trainer Brian Meehan has given him a nice break so there shouldn’t be a bounce factor.

It's a worry that Projection hasn’t won since 2015 but he’s not had that many runs since. He’s been going close in better races than this, including when just two lengths off the pace in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at the royal meeting. Surely he’ll win again soon for in-form Roger Charlton and this looks his best chance for a while.

Hey Jonesy has been knocking on the door and was in the mix for the prestigious Commonwealth Cup last time out. That run proves he likes this trip and, at the age of three, he’s got plenty more to offer.

Dream Of Dreams hasn’t progressed as hoped this season but Sir Michael Stoute won’t have rushed him and there were decent signs at Sandown last time when he showed up well in a hot contest. This trip suits and he shouldn’t be written off.

Yafta has done well in handicaps and went close stepped into Group 3 class for the Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle last time. He’s been consistent this term and looks capable of better.

RED BALLOONS can fly off with yet another Weatherbys Super Sprint for Richard Fahey.

The classy trainer has won three of the past five runnings and has another massive chance with this progressive filly. She’s not the most experienced but had plenty left in the tank when winning at Nottingham last time. This is a much hotter race than that but she showed the kind of pace you need for this. In theory, stall 17 is a little higher than you might like at Newbury but the past six winners of this have all been from double-figure boxes.

Fahey throws more than one dart and Zebzardee could be the pick of the others. He looked a good prospect when third at Redcar in May but didn’t build on that at Hamilton last time. But it’s early days and she’s capable of better.

Little Kim is another who catches the eye. She’s been running in top company and was beaten less than two lengths in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot. She followed that up by winning a Group 3 at Deauville in good style despite looking green. More improvement would put her right in the mix.

Templegate's TV tips

1.50 Newbury - Emotionless: 'Given how well the trainer’s horses are running, he should be fit enough to do the job here' (bet here)

2.25 Newbury - Sir Chauvelin: 'He is only 1lb higher in the weights and showed his liking for this fast ground when second in a hot handicap at Royal Ascot' (bet here)

3.00 Newbury - Bacchus: 'Looks open to improvement given he was off nine months before Royal Ascot win' (bet here)

3.35 Newbury - Red Ballons: 'The classy trainer has won three of the past five runnings and has another massive chance with this progressive filly' (bet here)

2.45 Newmarket - Alwaysandforever: 'The first-time visor may just squeeze a bit of improvement and it wouldn’t take much to win' (bet here)

2.05 Market Rasen - Fair Mountain: 'He sauntered around Ludlow last time to win by five lengths and he deserves this step up in class' (bet here)

3.15 Market Rasen - Bagad Bihoue: 'A 4lb rise in the weights for his win last time looks on the lenient side and he sees out this distance well' (bet here)

Kinks will find this a bit easier than the Norfolk Stakes he tackled last time and he’s got a couple of wins under his belt over this trip.

Ginger Nut battled on well to win at Windsor last time and those qualities could be an asset in this big field.

ALWAYSANDFOREVER can help Luca Cumani win this race for the third time in four years. She comes from a top family and hasn’t been asked too many questions so far with wins at Brighton and Windsor in small fields this season. She was well backed when beaten in a photo on her Listed debut at Pontefract last time on her first run over this trip. The first-time visor may just squeeze a bit of improvement and it wouldn’t take much to win.

Melodic Motion did well last season, placing in a couple of better races than this. She came back from eight months off for a quiet run at York last time. That should have helped fitness wise and she’ll be closer today.

Ejtyah was out of her depth in the Oaks latest and probably didn’t handle Epsom either. It was fair enough to run her in the Classic after an encouraging third in Musidora at York and there will be more to come on just her fourth run.

Worth Waiting deserves this step up in class after winning easily enough on her handicap debut at Windsor last time. Of course she needs more but was staying on well over the 1m2f trip and can figure.

Queen Of Connaught showed a good turn of pace to win at Newmarket last time and was value for more than the official margin of a length. She stays well and ran well in Listed company at Lingfield in May.

FAIR MOUNTAIN can hit the peaks in this competitive contest. He has had just three spins over hurdles since being bought from German Flat racing where he was placed in Group 1 company at his best. That’s pretty smart form and he’s clearly translated his talent to the jumping game.

After an educational debut at Ludlow in May he has hardly had to touch the accelerator to win at Bangor and Uttoxeter. He sauntered around there last time to win by five lengths and he deserves this step up in class.

The Skeltons have a strong hand in this as they also run Mister Universum who looks a nice prospect. He has a lot more miles on the clock but won well at Warwick last time when he ran away from his rivals nicely in the closing stages.

This is a tougher race than that but he likes the trip and could be a few steps ahead of the handicapper. Ocean Jive another former Flat performer who has taken well to hurdles. He won on debut at Huntingdon and has been on the podium twice since. He should improve and could run into the frame.

Court Minstrel has had his moments and, even though he was poor at Newton Abbot latest, he could easily finish a lot closer today. He was a Grade 3 winner at Chepstow last season off this mark and still has ability.

MARKET RASEN

3.15

Bag a big win in the Summer Plate. BAGAD BIHOUE warmed up for this with a convincing victory at Newton Abbot last time, travelling like a classy performer before settling matters quickly approaching the final fence. A 4lb rise in the weights for that effort looks on the lenient side and he sees out this distance well.

Paul Nicholls has a good chance of winning the race for the second year running

Trainer Paul Nicholls also has a decent chance with Alcala, who was second in that race. We know conditions suit because he won this contest 12 months ago and is only 1lb higher in the weights today. Elsewhere, Too Many Diamonds has been hoovering up handicaps at Southwell and can’t be ruled out on this step up in class. He’s been hiked up the weights but has few miles on the clock and there should be a lot more to come.

Seefood is an interesting runner coming back from 470 days off. That’s a bit less of a worry as he’s trained by Dr Richard Newland who is a past master of getting one fit at home. He was sent off favourite for the 2017 Topham at Aintree, which hints at his quality. A market move would indicate that he’s back to something like this best, which would see him go close.

There are plenty of others in with a shout, with More Buck’s impressive at Perth last time and Viconte Du Noyer having plenty of experience at the highest level. He’s on a long losing run but could easily run into the frame for Colin Tizzard and Tom Scudamore.
