JOCKEY OF THE MONTH

Who is Silvestre De Sousa? Champion jockey nominated for Stobart Jockey Of The Month award

De Sousa has been banging in the winners all over the country for punters in July

SILVESTRE DE SOUSA is up for another award - this time the title of July's Stobart Jockey of the Month.

De Sousa has not only notched up big wins at Glorious Goodwood, but the top jockey also landed a 634-1 four-timer at Pontefract last month.

The Brazilian, 37, won the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes (Group 2) aboard Pretty Pollyanna and the Qatar Vintage Stakes (Group 2) at Goodwood.

He extended his lead in the Stobart Flat Jockeys’ Championship with 31 wins from 127 rides at a strike rate of 24%.

De Sousa admitted that despite regularly riding three/four/five-timers, the four-timer at Pontefract was particularly special.

He said: “I had a non-runner at Pontefract that day, which I thought was my best chance of a winner. The rest I thought had small chances, as it turns out they all won!

“I’ve had a lot of four-timers and five-timers, for some they come once in a blue moon, but for me it’s normal now. However, I can’t remember the last time I went to race and won four out of four and won a listed race (Big Country) at the same time.

“You gain confidence when you’re on a roll, when the third one came in I knew it was my day and that I had a huge opportunity in the fourth. I went to Pontefract and grabbed the bull by the horns.

"I went there to win the races and that’s what I did, I didn’t go there to come second.

“It would be a fantastic achievement to win this award, I put a lot of mileage in the tank in July so this would be a reward for that! I’ve got a lot of racing coming up this month and being in contention for the Stobart Jockey of the Month gives me motivation to keep pushing for winners in the Stobart Flat Jockeys’ Championship.”
