Templegate’s horse racing tips: Sandown, Lingfield, Wolverhampton, Chelmsford, Newton Abbot, Chester and Beverley – Top betting preview for TODAY’S ITV racing

Sandown, Lingfield, Wolverhampton, Chelmsford, Newton Abbot, Chester and Beverley come under the spotlight as Templegate gives you his best bets for the day

Sandown 1.50

HET Had up in this dash up the Sandown sprint course.

HADDAF loves this stiff straight 5f. He’s won twice from four visits including a Listed race in June.

3

It’s not hard to forgive his below-par effort in the Stewards’ Cup as he just doesn’t seem as good over 6f.

His trainer James Tate has not had a great season but he’s fired in a few winners recently and might be about to hit form.

Rapid Applause is an obvious danger. He’s won his last two races having joined Mick Easterby from Ireland during the winter. He’s climbed the weights rather rapidly but he’s had a break since winning at Hamilton in May and could easily have improved again.

Rio Ronaldo has a great record at this track and he has the stall on the far rail. That might not do him any good as he likes to be held up so he’ll need plenty of luck to pick his way through from the rear.

Shamshon came good at Newmarket last time. He’s still nicely treated but he does seem to like the July Course.

2.25

I’VE high hopes for MOUNTAIN ANGEL.

He bumped into some good ‘uns last season and signed off with a solid fifth behind top prospect Addeybb in the Silver Cambridgeshire.

There was a huge amount to like about the way he bolted up on his return to action at Ascot over 1m on easy ground and he ran well at this track on his subsequent start.

He made a promising return from more than two months off the track at Haydock last time out and he looks ready for the step up in distance.

Master Carpenter looks nailed on to run well. He’s not been so low in the weights since he was a two-year-old and there’s been signs he’s running back into form this summer.

His effort over 1m at this track in July suggests the return to 1m2f will be ideal and the easier ground is the key to him.

History Writer showed his liking for this track when successful over 1m a month ago. He couldn’t get into the race from the rear at Newmarket last time but that’s not unusual at that track.

The longer trip is sure to suit but getting a position from stall 12 won’t be easy.

Communique is reliable but he might have to use up a fair bit of juice to get over from his wide draw.

HAVE the last Laugh in the Atalanta Stakes.

LAUGH ALOUD looked a filly from the top drawer when thrashing her rivals in an Epsom Group 3 on Derby day last year. She’s not been seen since but fitness should not be a worry with John Gosden doing the training.

If the ability is still there she will have a great chance.

Three-year-olds have a weight advantage at this time of year and that makes Veracious a worthy favourite. She’s run with credit in Group 1 races on her last two starts but it is hard to get a grip on what the form is worth.

She had a distant view of Alpha Centauri – the best miler of any sex in Europe – in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. That was her first run of the season and she again ran well behind Wild Illusion in the Nassau Stakes.

This will tell us how good she is. It’s hard to imagine she’s not up to this level but this race might not be run to suit.

Awesome Tank made all the running to win a course-and-distance Listed race in July. If she’s allowed her own way out in front she would be dangerous.

THERE’S some Hot stuff in the 188 Bet Solario Stakes.

TOO DARN HOT burst on to the scene with a stunning seven-length debut success at Sandown.

He is certainly bred to be smart as a brother of smart So Mi Dar and Arc hope Lah Ti Dar. The early signs are clearly promising and I can’t see the drop to 7f being any sort of problem.

He could easily boost his Classic claims today and this race has a decent record of throwing up future stars in recent year’s with Derby hero Masar lifting the pot 12 months ago.

Alan King is more used to winning top jumps prizes but he’s got a good Flat horse on his hands with Dunkerron.

He enjoyed the step up to 7f when runner-up in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood but he might struggle to confirm that form with less-experienced Confiding this time.

Arthur Kitt made it two out of two when successful in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot. He looked to be going nowhere at halfway but he picked up really well. A longer trip is probably what he wants.

Watan makes a quick reappearance after finishing runner-up in the Acomb Stakes at York last week. This looks a stronger race.

Chester 2.05

DIVE into LAKE VOLTA.

He was a Listed winner in June before chancing his arm in Group races. That didn’t work out but he ran a belter when third behind gambled-on Flaming Spear in a Goodwood handicap last week.

His draw means he should be able to get a nice position.

Stablemate Poet’s Society was Mark Johnson’s record breaker when winning at York last week. He’s drawn wider than ideal for a frontrunner but if he does get across to a prominent pitch eh would have to be feared.

This is the shortest distance Daira Prince has ever run over. He’s got the rails draw but that might not help. If he hasn’t got the pace to use it he’ll have the door slammed shut in his face.

Shady McCoy has been running well in top handicaps this season. His consistency means he remains high in the weights and he’ll need plenty of luck to pull off his hold-up running style.

Lualiwa won over today’s course and distance last summer. He’s not been in great form since his Musselburgh success in May but his York third when last seen in July was a bit better.

3.15

SCOUSE jockey Franny Norton is a master around Chester’s tight turns and I fancy him to notch a telly double for main ally Mark Johnston.

They team up with HOCHFELD in this Listed staying race. He looks likely to get his own way out in front from stall two and that will make him very hard to pass.

He has some ground to make up on Here And Now on last week’s York form but he sat too close to a proper pace over 2m. The drop in trip will help him home.

Here And Now bolted up at York. Incredibly, he beat Stradivarius at this course early last season but a strong pace looks important to him and this won’t pan out for him.

Group 3 winner Duratto has the best form but he’s another who likes to be held up. All his turf wins have come with some sort of soft in the official description so the drying ground won’t help him.

Top Tug started the season well before finding a poor draw and the ride in class to Group races against him. He’s another unlikely to get the race run to suit.

Beverley 2.45

THE old one is the best in the William Hill Beverley Bullet.

TAKE COVER might be an 11-year-old these days but there’s still few sprinters who can lay up with him.

He won this race 12 months ago when Final Venture was the runner-up and he went on to complete a hat-trick of wins. This year he hasn’t got a penalty to carry and arrives in decent form.

It was a cracking effort to chase home on-song Battaash in the King George at Goodwood and he wasn’t disgraced when sixth in last week’s Nunthorpe.

Final Venture also ran a cracker at York when runner-up behind El Astronaute in a hot handicap. He hasn’t won since landing a Haydock Listed prize last summer but he’s clearly in good form.

Mr Lupton beat shock Nunthorpe winner Alpha Delphini in a York Listed race in July. He’s got a good record at this level but he does shoulder a penalty. That doesn’t bother me as much as his wide draw.

Elnadim Star and Mirza might find this ground a bit quick, while Mythmaker is better over 6f.
