TODAY’S St Leger Stakes runners and tips: Your top pinstickers’ guide to Saturday’s feature race at Doncaster
Sun Racing run you through the contenders for the St Leger at Doncaster racecourse this Saturday
LOXLEY can stun hotpot Lah Ti Dar by winning the St Leger at Doncaster (3.35).
Godolphin have a quality stayer on their hands in this son of New Approach who scooted in at Deauville last time.
He improved with every stride over 1m4f there and should show a lot more now upped in distance.
There has been plenty of support this week and the softish ground on Town Moor will be right up his street.
Lah Ti Dar could be the next superstar filly and she was hugely impressive when winning at York last time.
She takes a fair step up in trip here and if she gets home, it will take a massive performance to stop her. But, at the prices, it’s worth taking the chance that shorter suits.
Kew Gardens will do his best to make this a real test as he stays all day. He was given too much to do on the Knavesmire when third last time and will be much happier at this distance.
DEE EX BEE 3/5
BEE could sting em. Finished second in the Derby but has been crying out for this distance all season. Has been given a break since a modest run in a Goodwood Group 3 last time but could easily bounce back and hit the frame.
KEW GARDENS 4/5
RIGHT on Kew. Left it too late over 1m4f in a York Group 2 last time and should be much happier over this distance. Will like the ground and showed his class when winning at the highest level in France. Must go close.
LOXLEY 5/5
LOX could hold the key. Looks a thorough stayer and was impressive in a French Group 2 last time. This is tougher but is open to improvement and should relish the ground. Should Lah Ti Dar fail to see out this trip, he will be the one to cash in.
NELSON 2/5
NOT on your nellie. Has gone backwards since winning the Ballysax at Leopardstown in April. Came up short behind Loxley last time but was third in Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot so should stay.
OLD PERSIAN 2/5
OLD your bets. Quality performer who won well at York last time but looks a 1m4f horse and was hanging on come the finish. Likes top of the ground so the rain won’t have helped either.
PROSCHEMA 1/5
PRO’S no go. Solid handicapper who enjoyed a similar trip when third at York last time. Needs a lot of improvement to figure in a Classic though.
RAYMOND TUSK 1/5
TUSK lacks bite. Solid stayer but came up short in a Newbury Group 3 latest after meeting trouble in running. Needs to show a lot more here to make the frame.
SOUTHERN FRANCE 3/5
SOUTHERN comfort. One of the better outsiders who chased home Kew Gardens in the Queen’s Vase. Good run in Irish St Leger Trial at The Curragh and has a lot more to offer. Each-way shout.
THE PENTAGON 2/5
PENTAGON’S out of shape. Looked like this trip would suit when finishing well over 1m4f at York last time but has come up short a couple of times at this level. Needs a lot more.
ZABRISKIE 1/5
ZAB ain’t fab. Looks the weakest of the O’Brien team and struggled at York last time. Not really sure what he’s doing in a race of this quality.
LAH TI DAR 4.5/5
DAR’S a star. Very impressive winner of a Listed contest at York last time by 10 lengths. Has massive talent and having just her third run but she’s not certain to stay on breeding. If she does she’ll win.
MAID UP 2/5
UP for a place. Connections shelled out £50,000 to supplement her after winning the March Stakes at Goodwood. There were only two horses to beat there and this will be a lot tougher. Playing for a place at best.
