Looking at the past winners, it’s clear that his has been a race for repeat heroes with Cue CardSilvianaco Conti and Kauto Star all enjoying multiple victories.

That is a big plus for Bristol De Mai who won this as easily as any of those superstars 12 months ago.

On the reverse for the Nigel Twiston-Davies runner is the fact that only one seven-year-old has taken this contest in the past decade.

Looking at another negative, Clan Des Obeaux is a little too low in the Official Ratings to be winning this race and is crossed out.

This year’s renewal is a little unusual because, while the past six winners of this race had run within a month, all of today’s line-up are making their seasonal debut.

Finishing in the first three on your last completed start has been important so we’ll overlook Thistlecrack who was fourth latest.

It’s no real shock to see us left with a choice between NATIVE RIVER and Might Bite.

Both horses have plenty going for them but, while Nicky Henderson has never won this race, Colin Tizzard has won three of the past five renewals with Cue Card.

So he knows what it takes to win this and his Native River can give him another victory.
