Soft ground star Clyne needs rain to take chance in Rendlesham Hurdle

Evan Williams' nine-year-old was pulled out of the Unibet Champion Hurdle Trial on Saturday due to ground conditions being too quick

CLYNE is on track for a Rendlesham Hurdle bid at Haydock next month - provided ground conditions are soft enough.

Evan Williams' multiple winner was pulled out of the Champion Hurdle Trial at the same on track on Saturday due to unsuitably fast going.

A winner of six races when the going description is soft or worse, the nine-year-old has demonstrated he's one of the toughest competitors in gruelling conditions.

With the ground not bottomless enough for him at the weekend, connections are hoping for a deluge in the lead-up to the Rendlesham next month.

Trainer Evan Williams said: "He will go to Rendlesham at Haydock. If the ground had been softer, we'd have gone for the Champion Hurdle Trial there."

Fifth to Midnight Shadow at Cheltenham when last seen on New Year's Day, the son of Hernando could take a big hike in trip ahead of a potential tilt at the Sun Racing Stayers' Hurdle.

Williams added: "I thought the horse was very well, but it was Cheltenham and it was good ground. He doesn't want that. That's why I won't run him on good ground again."
