Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather: UFC champ to ‘apply for MORE boxing licenses in US’ to keep options open for mega-fight venue

CONOR MCGREGOR will apply for MORE boxing licenses as a potential super-fight against Floyd Mayweather looms on the horizon.

The Irish UFC fighter has just been issued a boxing license in the state of California, after the State Athletic Commission there accepted his application.

And now McGregor is set to apply for boxing licenses from more states in a bid to make a potential switch to boxing come true.

States such as New York, Nevada and Texas could soon be hearing from The Notorious, reports , being prominent areas for big-time boxing.

McGregor became the first man to simultaneously hold Ultimate Fighting Championship titles in two weight divisions when he beat Eddie Alvarez in New York on November 12.

A powerful puncher, McGregor has previously toyed with the idea of moving from the UFC octagon to the traditional boxing ring – even floating the idea of taking on undefeated and now-retired Mayweather.

Mayweather has a 49-0 winning record – the joint best in boxing history – while McGregor has risen to be the most lucrative cage fighter on the planet.

Despite the constant murmurings of a McGregor vs Mayweather boxing fight, Leonard Ellerbe, chief executive of Mayweather Promotions, told ESPN on Wednesday that he didn’t see the match-up happening.

“It’s all a game,” Ellerbesaid. “It’s all a calculated effort to gain more fans.

“Conor McGregor can say anything he wants to, but he has a boss and his name is (UFC president) Dana White.”

However, Mayweather has previously claimed he would put the gloves back on to face McGregor.

He said: “If I do fight, it’s only against Conor McGregor . . . not against nobody else.

“Because this match-up is so intriguing. You have [a boxer] against an MMA fighter – one of the best MMA fighters to ever stand up and do it. He’s a strong fighter, and when I look at his fights, he’s a little faster than I thought he was.”
