Moto2 rider Alex Rins spectacularly crashes out of the German Grand Prix as wet weather plays havoc

The Spanish star was sent sprawling onto the gravel with just three laps remaining at the Sachsenring circuit

MOTO2 rider Alex Rins suffered a horrific crash at the German Grand Prix on Sunday.

The Spanish rider, 20, was sent out of the race with just three laps remaining as the wet weather played havoc at the Sachsenring circuit in Hohenstein-Ernstthal, eastern Germany.

Rins left the track on a stretcher after he spectacularly flew off his bike and was sent sprawling across the gravel.

He looked in some pain and was seen slumped over his Paginas Amarillas vehicle as track officials rushed to his aide.

Rins was level on points with reigning champion Johann Zarco before the race, but the Frenchman finished 25 points clear after claiming victory.

Zarco edged out future Tech 3 Yamaha MotoGP teammate Jonas Folger by just 0.059 seconds at the finish line.

Rins wasn't the only rider who crashed out as the rain ran riot, leaving just 15 riders to finish the race.

At one stage, Rins led after Takaaki Nakagami crashed out on the seventh lap before Franco Morbidelli took the lead but he later went out with seven laps remaining.

Rins was battling it out for the lead with Zarco and Folger and looked to be settling for third place when he crashed with just three laps to go.

Ahead of the race, Rins wrote on Twitter: "Rainy Race Day"

In a series of tweets, the Kalex rider also wrote: "We started #GermanGP with good feelings despite [rain emoji]
