F1 star Fernando Alonso obliterates two birds during first Indy 500 testing lap
Spaniard flew around the track in Indianapolis as race cars reach incredible top speeds of 222 mph
FERNANDO ALONSO had no problems in his first IndyCar experience as he flew round the circuit in Indianapolis.
But two unfortunate birds felt the full force of his top speed, which can reach 222 mph, when they flew right into the path of the Spaniard.
As expected all that was left was a group of feathers that floated helplessly onto the race track as his orange racing car sped off.
The double Formula One world champion has been given leave by his McLaren team to miss the Monaco Grand Prix in order to race in the Indy 500.
And he had his first preparations ahead of the American racing series on Wednesday when he completed the mandatory ‘rookie’ test.
All drivers racing at Indianapolis for the first time must complete the same test.
Alonso’s absence from the Monaco Grand Prix on May 28 means Brit Jenson Button will come out of retirement to race in the McLaren.
It has been a disappointing start to the season for struggling McLaren as they struggle to keep pace with their rivals.
They sit rock bottom of the constructors championship alongside Sauber with zero points from the opening four races.
