Rio Olympics 2016 schedule: the Brits in action today – Andy Murray, William Fox-Pitt, Claudia Fragapane, Giles Scott
With one gold, one silver and two bronzes in the bag, there are plenty of opportunities today for Team GB to climb up the medal table in Rio. See how you can catch it all below...
12.30pm BRITISH rowers lead the way with the bronze medal winner from London four years ago, ALAN CAMPBELL, going in the quarter-finals of the singles skulls.
1pm NAOMI FOLKARD, the first GB woman in action in the Games last Friday, is favourite as she takes on Indonesia’s Ika Rochmawati in the first knock-out round of the archery.
1.50pm IT’S back to the waters of the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas where STEWART INNES and ALAN SINCLAIR bid for a place in the final of the men’s coxless pair.
2pm FROM two blades to four legs at the Deodoro Olympic Park for the showjumping phase of the three day event.
WILLIAM FOX-PITT dropped to 22nd after a costly refusal in the cross country but the team of him, PIPPA FUNNELL, GEMMA TATTERSALL and KITTY KING are seventh, needing a near-perfect jumping performance to nick a medal.
2.10pm BACK to the water where KATHERINE GRAINGER and VICKY THORNLEY go in the semis of the double sculls — finishing at about the same time as Britain’s best judo medal hope, Israeli-born two-time world champion ALICE SCHLESINGER, hopes to complete stage one of her five-round medal route against Korea’s Bak Jiyun in the 63kg class.
3.30pm BOXING medal hope JOE CORDINA faces Hurshid Tojibaev of Uzbekistan in his second-round lightweight contest.
4pm TEAM GB’S Rugby Sevens team — including JAMES DAVIES, brother of Wales and British Lions star Jonathan — have a tough opener against Kenya in the first of two pool matches.
Victory would be a huge step towards the semi-finals although only the group winners are guaranteed to go through.
5pm SAILING’S GILES SCOTT is a red-hot favourite to win Britain’s fifth successive Finn class gold and he starts his campaign on Guanabara Bay, with the first of two races. For plenty of reasons, he will hope to keep his nose out of the water.
Also in action are windsurfers BRIONY SHAW at 5.05pm amd NICK DEMPSEY at 5.15pm as well as the two laser sailors, ALISON YOUNG and NICK THOMPSON.
5.30pm DAVID FLORENCE won silver in the two-man canoe slalom four years ago but qualified so easily that he didn’t bother with his second run and aims to confirm his final place in the C1 event.
6pm GUANABARA BAY is the focus again with the five sailing boats back in action, led by Dempsey at 6.15pm and 7.15, and Scott at 6.30pm before Florence aims to go for gold at the Deodoro Whitewater Stadium at 7.16pm.
This is also the earliest ANDY MURRAY could be on court against Argentine Juan Monaco . . . but it is likely to be later.
8pm WE’RE off to the calm, initially, followed by a pageant of twists and somersaults as LOIS TOULSON and TONIA COUCH go in the 10m platform synchro diving.
At the same time pocket rocket CLAUDIA FRAGAPANE and the rest of the GB women’s team — fourth in qualifying but within two points of second-placed China — are hunting for a medal.
10pm A GOAL glut, surely, for Team GB’s MEN’S HOCKEY side after their humbling by Belgium in their opener and then a draw with New Zealand.
Hosts Brazil are out of their depth and have already shipped 19 goals in their first two matches. It’s a question of “how many?”, surely . . .
Midnight TIME for a catchup on the days proceedings before the aquatics centre sees MICHAEL PHELPS aiming to win an astonishing 20th gold medal in the 200m butterfly at 2.28am.
The day’s action concludes with Britain’s 4 x 200m freestyle relay team hunting for a medal at 3.38am
