Rio Olympics 2016 schedule: the Brits in action today – Chris Froome leads the medal charge as Helen Glover and Heather Stanning continue title defence

TOUR de France champ Chris Froome leads Great Britain's medal hopes in Rio today. Froome competes in the time-trial at 2pm – but will be up against the flying Dutchman Tom Dumoulin.

12.30pm  TO start the   action, HELEN  GLOVER  and HEATHER STANNING dip their oars, with the reigning champs battling for a spot in  the women’s pairs final at 4.30pm.

On dry land Beijing silver medallist EMMA POOLEY goes for cycling gold in the women’s time trial.

1pm  STEVEN SCOTT and   TIM KNEALE set  their   sights on shooting glory in the double trap qualifiers, with the medals set to be decided by 8pm.

2pm  CYCLING stars  CHRIS  FROOME  and  GERAINT THOMAS  set the wheels in motion in the men’s time trial.

Over at the dressage, CHARLOTTE DUJARDIN  begins the defence of her individual and team titles, with  fellow 2012 winner CARL HESTER also in the saddle.

Then it is back to the  rowing  where ANGUS GROOM, PETER LAMBERT, JACK BEAUMONT and SAM TOWNSEND pull for glory in the men’s quad final at 2.10pm.

2.30pm   SALLY  CONWAY  is  flying the   flag for Britain in the women’s 70kg judo, beginning with a bout with  Houda Miled of Tunisia for a place in the last 16.

3.10pm  LONDON bronze  medallist ALAN  CAMPBELL has his eyes on a podium return but must first get through the  semis of the single sculls.

3.45pm OVER to boxing  where QAIS ASHFAQ  battles it out with Chatchai Butdee of Thailand in the men’s bantam round of 32.

4pm  IT’S oval  ball time  now  as Great Britain complete  their Pool C campaign in the men’s RUGBY  SEVENS against New Zealand ahead of the first quarter- final at 9pm.

5pm JONATHAN  CALLERI,  a target for West Ham, plays for Argentina against  Honduras in the men’s football.

Half an hour later Great Britain’s WOMEN’S HOCKEY side can cement their position at the top of Pool B by getting the better of  Argentina, the 2012 silver medallists.  JOE CLARKE is in aquatic action at the same time in the men’s kayak single semis.

It is also time for the swimming, with MOLLY RENSHAW up against 100m gold medallist LILLY KING in the 200m breaststroke heats from 5.47pm onwards, while CHLOE TUTTON hopes to make a splash in her heat.

IEUAN LLOYD is in the same men’s 200m individual medley heat as the legendary MICHAEL PHELPS at 6.24pm, with DANIEL WALLACE in the pool five minutes earlier. At 6.43pm the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay team are in the same heat as USA, China and Hungary.

8pm TIME to see if European  diving champions JACK  LAUGHER and CHRIS MEARS can add to the medal tally in the men’s 3m syncro springboard final.

Then gym stars NILE WILSON and MAX WHITLOCK aim to bounce back from being  pipped for a team medal by going all the way in the individual all-around.

9pm  PATRICK  HUSTON,  the man dubbed the Eric Cantona of archery,  is up against Rick van der Ven at 9.36pm for a place in the men’s individual last 16.

12.30am CRUNCH time for Team GB’s MEN’S HOCKEY team in Group A as they take on Australia, who pipped them for bronze in London four years ago.

The action then hots up in the aquatics centre with the men’s 200m breaststroke final at 2.03am, followed by the women’s 200m butterfly final at 2.54am, the men’s 100m freestyle final at 3.03am and the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay final at 3.55am.
