Rio Olympics 2016: Straight Olympic journalist causes anger after outing gay athletes on hookup apps

A STRAIGHT journalist working at the Olympics in Rio has sparked outrage after attempting to trick gay athletes to out themselves on hookup apps.

Nico Hines, who has a wife and child, used the app Grindr in an attempt to lure athletes to hit on him in the Olympic Village.

It has been no secret that athletes are using dating apps such as Tinder in order to meet other competitors with matches in the Village up 129 per cent on last weekend.

But Hines caused a strong reaction from loyal readers and other journalists by chatting to gay athletes and arranging to meet up.

In his article for the Daily Beast, Hines initially included the nationalities and sport of the athletes with the information provided enough to identify the athletes.

The publication has since edited the article to remove the nationalities.

Readers have since blasted Hines' attempts of using Grindr by saying he is homophobic and disrupting their private lives.

In his article, Hines included that he 'didn't lie to anyone or pretend to be someone I wasn't' and used his own picture to attract athletes.
