Rio Olympics 2016: Liverpool fan Wayde Van Niekerk trolls Arsenal after winning gold and breaking 400m world record

WAYDE VAN NIEKERK smashed the world record to win gold on another sensational night in Rio - and the massive Liverpool fan wasted no time in trolling Arsenal after the race.

The South African speedster, 24, took apart US runner Michael Johnson's 17-year record over 400m - finishing 0.15 seconds quicker than the time Johnson clocked in Seville in 1999.

And after collecting his medal, he discussed how he watched his Liverpool heroes narrowly Arsenal 4-3 in his pre-race preparations, barely handling the tension before using it to spur him on to gold.

He said: "I watched the Liverpool match before, I was losing my mind because it was a tight match. We got the win.

"My brother is an Arsenal fan. Now I’ve got the world record and Liverpool beat Arsenal."

Many are tipping van Niekerk, who is trained by his 74-year-old great-grandmother Ans Botha, to become the next - himself a huge Manchester United fan.

And when Bolt retires, van Niekerk can give Liverpool one up on the Red Devils, having received a signed Liverpool jersey by Daniel Sturridge and yesterday's two-goal hero Philippe Coutinho.

Jurgen Klopp's Reds stormed into a 4-1 lead at the Emirates Stadium in their opening game, before Arsene Wenger's men battled back to 4-3 - but it was not enough.
