The tally is as many as they won in Beijing in 2008, but the 50 medals Britain have won overall is now their highest ever tally at an oversees Olympics.

Laura Trott won the second gold medal of the day with a dominant victory in the omnium, and that was followed by her fiance Jason Kenny winning the keirin for his sixth Olympic gold.

Becky James also won silver in track cycling in the women's sprint while Jack Laugher picked up the same colour in the men's 3m springboard diving.

There were two gymnastics bronze medals on Tuesday for Great Britain with Nile Wilson coming in third on the men's horizontal bar and Amy Tinkler reaching the podium in the women's floor.

Katy Marchant also won bronze in the women's sprint in the velodrome, while Joshua Buatsi won Britain's first boxing medal of the Games by picking up bronze in the men's light heavyweight division.

China are two gold medals adrift in third place on 17 while Russia in fourth place have 12.

The United States are still a long way out in front on 28 gold medals with the exact same number of silver and bronzes to give them a total of 84.
