The two-time Commonwealth silver medallist had set a personal best of 54.09secs to win the Diamond League in Monaco last month, the sixth fastest time in the world this year.

But the 29 year-old, who failed to get through the semi-finals at London 2012 although she was part of the 4x400m relay team that finished fifth at the Games four years ago, could only clock 54.61secs last night.

American favourite Dalilah Muhammad - the fastest in the world over the distance this year -posted 53.17secs to live up to her billing.

Doyle had been bidding to follow in the footsteps of Natasha Danvers who got 400m hurdles bronze for Britain at Beijing 2008.
