The allegation came just as the 29-year-old began a new National Rugby League season with St George Illawarra Dragons.

Police say an investigation is ongoing after the alleged incident on Tuesday 8 March.

A New South Wales Police statement said: "Earlier this month officers attached to South Sydney Police Area Command commenced an investigation into reports a woman was sexually touched by a man known to her on Tuesday 8th March.

“Those inquiries are continuing.”

St George also released a statement that read: “The St George Illawarra Dragons have been made aware of a matter involving one of its players by the NRL integrity unit.

“The Dragons are working closely with all parties as the matter is under police investigation.”

Burgess has represented England 15 times during his rugby league career.

He has spent the majority of his club time Down Under with South Sydney and now St George Illawarra.

The Yorkshire-born prop had a spell at Wigan Warriors in the Super League in 2020.

But he returned to the NRL the following year and is under contract with the Dragons until 2023.
