Archie Bruce’s family fly to France after rugby star is found dead aged 20 in hotel room following Batley Bulldogs debut
TRAGIC Archie Bruce's family have flown to the south of France after he was found dead in his hotel room at the age of 20.
The rugby league scrum-half had made his debut for Batley Bulldogs against Toulouse in a 46-0 defeat for the Championship side just the night before.
Most of the Batley players arrived back in England last night after delaying their return but coach Matt Diskin is staying in France to be with Bruce's family.
Batley director John Miller said: "The first concern, obviously, was for Archie's family.
"The second concern was to get the rest of the players back to their family and friends.
"One or two stayed on with the chairman, who is due to come back, but Matt is staying on to be with Archie's family.
"We don't know any more. All I know is that at 1am he was the happiest kid on the planet and a few hours later he's no longer with us."
Bruce was signed from local amateur club Dewsbury Moor in West Yorkshire and was found dead just hours after coming off the bench for the Bulldogs.
An investigation into the cause of his death is being launched.
'HE WAS HAPPIEST KID ON THE PLANET'
A set up by the RFL Benevolent Fund in his memory has already raised more than £3,600 of a £5,000 goal.
The page vows to "leave a lasting legacy in Archie's name and benefit charities and causes he and his family support".
England international Alex Walmsley was among the first to pay tribute to Bruce.
He said: "Incredibly sad news to wake up to, my condolences go out to his family, friends and team-mates at both Batley and Dewsbury Moor. RIP Archie."
Former Leeds Rhino and Great Britain ace Keith Senior wrote: "Never nice to hear news like this especially at such a young age. Condolences to all his family and friends."
A statement released by Batley club chairman Kevin Nicholas yesterday said: "Batley Bulldogs are greatly saddened to announce the passing of their player Archie Bruce (20) who was found in his hotel bedroom early this morning having made his debut against Toulouse the previous evening.
