MISSILE ALERT
Wimbledon 2016: Canadian Milos Raonic outguns Sam Querrey in battle of the big servers
Man they call the Missile flying high thanks to coaching from John McEnroe and the inspiration of Pete Sampras
MILOS RAONIC crushed Sam Querrey in the North American battle of the big servers.
The Canadian, 25, dropped just seven points on his own serve in the first two sets against USA’s Querrey, who stunned Novak Djokovic in the third round.
And despite surprisingly losing the third set, Raonic was not to be outdone as he went through to his second Wimbledon semi-final 6-4, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.
The sixth seed is now just two wins away from becoming the first North American since his idol Pete Sampras to win the title at SW19.
And the Missile will certainly take some stopping if the way he served against Querrey is anything to go by.
Raonic is being coached by three-time Wimbledon winner John McEnroe, who was commentating on Roger Federer’s Centre Court clash with Marin Cilic rather than watching his player.
And their link-up is clearly working given the world No7 also reached his first grass court final - at Queen’s - just before Wimbledon.
Raonic will have been wary of Querrey coming into this quarter-final, given the 28th seed’s win over Djokovic and subsequent straight sets victory over Nicolas Mahut.
But Querrey was forced to save a break point in his first service game.
And from 30-0 down, Raonic took Querrey’s serve in a decisive tenth game to clinch the first set.
Raonic himself had dropped just three points on his own serve by this point.
And it was a similar story in the second, as he dominated on serve and then broke Querrey in the 12th game to go 2-0 up in sets.
It seemed like Raonic would again rattle off the third to cruise through in straight sets.
But in the 11th game, a rare double fault gave Querrey his first break point.
And the world No41 gleefully took his chance at the net, before holding on his own serve.
Querrey was now back in the match and forced Raonic to save a break point in the first game of the fourth.
But in the 10th game he double faulted to hand two match points to his opponent.
And Raonic took it at the first attempt to go through to the last four.
