US Open 2016: Gael Monfils narrowly avoids foot being crushed under falling clock

The Frenchman crashed into the clock at the back of the court and then fell down during his match with Gilles Muller

TIME ALMOST caught up with French tennis star Gael Monfils.

No 10 seed Monfils, 29, ran full pelt towards the back of the court trying to retrieve the ball during his first-round match against Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller.

The Frenchman ended up crashing his foot into a clock – which then fell out of the hoarding on top of him.

Monfils managed to jump out of the way to avoid the danger of serious injury.

Officials fixed the clock and Monfils went on to win 6-4 6-2 7-6, the match finishing exactly half an hour after the remarkable incident.
