Jo Konta’s stunning Roland Garros run ends in semi-finals with 7-5 7-6 loss to Marketa Vondrousova

JO KONTA’S French Open run is over after she suffered Czech Mate in the semi-finals.

The British star woefully under-performed, produced far too many errors and chose the wrong drop-shot time after time as she was beaten 7-5 7-6 by Czech teenager Marketa Vondrousova at Roland Garros.

The 28-year-old, who started out as the favourite to progress, failed to become the first British woman to reach the final here since Sue Barker in 1976.

Despite her experience and seniority, Konta was unable to get past the talented teen but she will be kicking herself for wasting a glorious opportunity to create new sporting ground for her country.

Konta led 5-3 and had three sets points in the opening set but Vondrousova bounced back to win the next four games.

Konta led with a break in the second set and was serving at 5-4 up but once again she surrendered the advantage.

Vondrousova, who is only 19 years old, held her nerve in the second tie-break and booked her spot in the final – the youngest female in a Grand Slam showpiece occasion for more than a decade.

It was a depressing tale once again for the deflated Konta on the grandest stage. This was her third Grand Slam semi-final and she has not yet won a set in a last-four match.

This was her best chance to get to a major final and she threw it away countless times.

The only hope is that she can put this disappointment behind her and use her rebirth on clay to perform again on the grass-court season.

In a roller-coaster second semi-final, Ashleigh Barty came from one set down to beat American Amanda Anisimova 6-7 6-3 6-3.
