Punk - real name Phillip Brooks - announced he will make periodic appearances as a panellist but fans are dreaming of him taking to the ring at WrestleMania.

He said: “It’s as simple as this – just when they think they’ve got the answers, I change the culture. I’ll see you here next week.”

WWE's partnership with broadcasting giant Fox is aiming to take on the rising challenge of wealthy rival AEW.

And convincing Punk, who has been called out by Logan Paul, to return is a major coup for Vince McMahon and TV execs.

One fan tweeted: "Five years ago CM Punk went out to get a bottle of Pepsi & didn’t come back...until today."

And another added: "THEY EVEN PLAYED CULT OF PERSONALITY I MISSED CM PUNK YOOOO".

And a delighted viewer tweeted a video of a man breaking into tears, commenting: "Cm Punk is officially on WWE Backstage Bro.. I.. I knew he’d come home man.."

In other WWE news, SunSport exclusively revealed Jinder Mahal has thrown the door open to joining NXT, while revealing his dream of facing Brock Lesnar in his home town on the Grandest Stage of Them All.

The 33-year-old, real name Yuvraj Singh Dhesi, last competed in June against Ali at a live event before suffering injury.
