scrumptious

Have you discovered the sweet treats in this musical film and on Sun Bingo?

WATCHING old films can feel like catching up with friends. You know the characters, the plot and – in the case of musicals – you can belt out the words to the songs like a pro.

However, sometimes, the love dries up.

Today, Sun Bingo are putting the tough question to you: has Chitty Chitty Bang Bang stood the test of time, holding its own as a loveable classic?

Or, has time been cruel and it’s not so much a sugar-sweet delight, as a sour ball disaster.

Verdict: a classic

The story has all the ingredients of a family-favourite classic.

The wacky but talented inventor just needs a bit of luck (and money) to make his creations a hit.

The gorgeous heiress to a confectionary fortune, with a fabulous tongue-in-cheek name (Truly Scrumptious) has it all, except love.

You know where this is going and you’re definitely coming along for the ride in this flying car.

Throw in a rescue mission to a land that’s banned children and some of the most iconic songs in musical history, and there’s no choice but to find this film a sweet treat.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang knew what it wanted to be, a musical for kids but that could also be enjoyed by the accompanying adults.

If this still hasn’t convinced you, just remember how jealous you were that your breakfast wasn’t delivered by Caractacus Pott’s egg-cracking, sausage-sizzling marvellous machine.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was a magical car that could fly, zoom over water and seemed to have a mind of its on, thwarting child-hating barons and saving the day!

It’s our fine, four-fendered friend.

Verdict: a flop

This film belongs in Room 101. For a musical meant for children, it’s incredibly not child-friendly?

Two words for you – Child Catcher. What on Earth is the Child Catcher?

What is his vendetta against minors and why is he allowed anywhere near a children’s film?

Caractacus is also not great. He’s a man desperate to get his back, and yet he pauses the plan in order to sing a lullaby to the village children…

ARE THESE SUNNY CHARACTERS HEROES OR VILLAINS?

The rescue mission isn’t the only thing that drags on, as the film’s running time is a taxing 2 hours and 24 minutes (also proof that it’s not really meant for kids).

It seems that we aren’t alone in struggling to find the appeal. Dick Van Dyke has spoken out since and stated that “it was no Mary Poppins”.

Van Dyke repeatedly said no to the film, until the money reached over seven figures and he got a percentage of the back end.

The filming sounds like a not-so-Toot-Sweet experience, with bad blood between Van Dyke and Albert Broccoli, as well as rumours that large portions of Roald Dahl’s script were rewritten.

Bingo never leaves a bad taste

All this talk about confectionary has given us an appetite for some sugary treats.
