Rogen and director/producer Goldberg have collaborated on a number of films including cult cannabis flick The Pinapple Express, Superbad and The Interview.

They teamed up with Canadian cannabis producer Canopy Growth Corp to get their new venture off the ground.

Canopy will take a 25 per cent stake in the new business and will help the stars with infrastructure and expertise.

Rogen, 36, said in a statement: "We have been working on this quietly for years and seeing everything come together is a dream come true.

"We could not be more passionate about this company and are dedicated to doing everything the right way. It is extremely important to us to treat cannabis with the reverence it deserves. What a time!"

In a press release the company added it was established "to make it easier for people to learn to love cannabis".

Canopy president and co-chief executive Mark Zekulin added: "We have been getting to know the Houseplant team for quite a while now and continue to be impressed by their understanding of the cannabis consumer, attention to detail, and drive towards their vision."

Rogen later tweeted: "After five years of hard work, I'm pleased to be launching my cannabis company, Houseplant. Thank you."

The actor is famous for playing stoner roles in several other major films, including Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

The recreational use of cannabis was made legal in Canada last year.

One person commented: "Thank you for taking the time to do it right, it's truly going to be an experience."
