The texts were sent on or around Valentines Day in February but for some reason didn't come through.

Instead, they began arriving en masse on Thursday, much to the confusion of their recipients.

These people seemingly never received the texts in the first place, while the senders had no idea the messages hadn't arrived.

"My friend's Mom just got a 'Happy Valentines Day' text from her recently deceased husband," claimed one Twitter user.

Another wrote: "I just got a text from my best friend's phone. Only issue is she's been dead since February."

Others told of awkward moments as Valentines Day texts sent by ex-lovers suddenly came through.

"[My ex and I] haven’t spoken in months," wrote one Twitter user. "The text I received said that he couldn’t wait to see me tonight.

"I jumped to conclusions and thought he was texting someone else and send it to me as an 'accident' trying to make me jealous. Which didn’t work.

"I sent a long text back saying it was immature and then saw it was happening to everyone and felt bad."

Major US carriers including Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint were all involved in the reports, according to .

The issues affected both iPhone and Android handsets.

According to several phone carriers, including Verizon and T-Mobile, the glitch was the fault of third-party company Syniverse.

Syniverse, a text message service provider, confirmed a maintenance update caused the issue.

In total, 168,149 previously undelivered messages were sent.

The Florida firm confirmed the issue had been resolved.

"We are in the process of reviewing our internal procedures to ensure this does not happen again," a spokesperson said.
