Hitler’s vegetable garden discovered at his secret headquarters in Poland
HITLER'S secret vegetable garden has been discovered at his infamous Wolf's Lair headquarters in modern day Poland.
The top secret reinforced bunker is where Adolf Hitler spent most of his time in the final years of WWII but it was abandoned and partly destroyed in 1945 before Soviet forces could discover it.
The garden was discovered during excavations in the grounds of a nearby theme park called Mazurolandia.
Mazurolandia said in a translated : "We discovered Hitler's Garden in the 4th Zone of the Wolf's Lair."
The excavations started this summer and involved experts from the Mazurian Military Museum who were brought in to investigate the site.
The garden was reportedly found around 2,953 feet from Hitler's bunker.
The excavation uncovered foundations of a gardener's house, two greenhouses and an underground boiler room.
This boiler room is thought to have provided the right environment for growing fresh produce all year round.
Wartime artefacts were also found like glassware and ceramics.
Hitler was vegetarian and very paranoid about being poisoned so the vegetable garden was probably very important to him.
A number of food tasters worked at Wolf's Lair so they could sample Hitler's meals before he did.
One of the food tasters, Margot Woelk, previously told the Associated Press: "The food was delicious, only the best vegetables, asparagus, bell peppers, everything you can imagine. And always with a side of rice or pasta."
Woelk was one of 15 young women who were made to taste Hitler's food at Wolf's Lair.
The bunker was actually the location of an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate the evil dictator in 1944.
Trusted colonel Claus von Stauffenberg detonated a bomb in a conference room there but Hitler survived.
Almost 5,000 people were executed due to the failed assassination, including von Stauffenberg.
