Nasa astronaut snaps stunning view of London at night from International Space Station

NASA astronaut Jessica Meir has tweeted a memorising image of what London looks like from space.

The night time shot was taken by the female astronaut all the way from the International Space Station (ISS), which orbits Earth at an altitude of around 250 miles.

Meir wrote alongside the : "Behold the bright lights of fair town! Views of city lights from above evoke images of spider webs, shattered glass, or fractal art.

"Many fond memories with my relatives and friends in this lovely city – thinking of you all from low Earth orbit. ".

The photo is so clear you can make out the Thames and the patchwork of roads and buildings of the capital city.

Meir often uses Twitter to show off her photography skills with fascinating images taken from space.

The female astronaut isn't just well-known for her photography skills though.

She made history last month alongside her colleague Christina Koch when they completed the first all female spacewalk.

The purpose of the spacewalk back in October was to replace a battery charger.

Footage of the mission was beamed out via a livestream and watched all over the world.

Meir and Koch's spacewalk was actually the 221st to be conducted from the ISS for maintenance purposes.

Lots of the astronauts on the ISS post regularly on social media about what they're doing up there.

What is the ISS?

Here's what you need to know about the International Space Station...

  • The International Space Station, often abbreviated to ISS, is a large space craft that orbits Earth and houses astronauts who go up there to complete scientific missions
  • Many countries worked together to build it and they work together to use it
  • It is made up of many pieces, which astronauts had to send up individually on rockets and put together from 1998 to 2000
  • Ever since the year 2000, people have lived on the ISS
  • Nasa uses the ISS to learn about living and working in space
  • It is approximately 250 miles above Earth and orbits around the planet just like a satellite
  • Living inside the ISS is said to be like living inside a big house with five bedrooms, two bathrooms, a gym, lots of science labs and a big bay window for viewing Earth

In other space news, an ‘impossible’ black hole found in the Milky Way is so big science says it shouldn’t exist.

Nasa has released a puzzling image of a nearly perfect ring galaxy.

And, Elon Musk's Starlink satellites have come under fire once again for 'interrupting' footage of a meteor shower.
