2020 iPhone could be ‘thinnest yet’ thanks to new screen tech that also boosts battery life
PLENTY of rumours have been circulating about the iPhone 12 but some of the latest are hinting that it could be the thinnest iPhone yet.
This theory is being deduced from claims that the device will come with OLED screens made by LG, which are known to be cheaper and thinner thanks to touchscreen tech already embedded in the display.
Having this touchscreen tech already embedded means there is no need for a separate layer that would bulk up the thickness of the phone.
These claims have been made by the Korean electronics media site .
If they are true, it still doesn't necessarily mean that the price of the iPhone 12 will reflect its cheaper screen.
The same report by The Elec also hints that the new screens will be more power efficient, which would be useful for prolonging battery life.
This would be made possible by LG using low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) screen technology.
The same type that is used in the Apple Watch 4 and 5.
Thanks to LTPO, Apple Watch 5 can maintain all-day battery life even if the screen is always on.
An always-on display may also be something Apple is planning for the iPhone 12.
Some expenisve Android phones have had this capability for a while.
However, we don't know for sure whether LTPO technology will be applied for 2020 iPhones or if it may be coming later.
As with all rumours, we need to wait for official word from Apple later before we'll know for sure.
