Facebook will pay you for recordings of your speech in plot to make AI smarter
FACEBOOK will now pay users for voice recordings in a bid to improve the firm's AI tech.
You'll need to read aloud sentences prepared by Facebook, to help the social media giant better understand pronunciation.
Facebook paying for voice recordings – what's happening?
The company has launched a new section called Pronunciations inside its Viewpoints app.
You'll need to go into the app to check if you qualify.
Then you'll be given the opportunity to record the phrase 'Hey Portal'.
Portal is Facebook's smart home speaker, designed to rival the Amazon Alexa and Google Home.
After each time you say 'Hey Portal', you'll have to add the first name of a friend from your list – up to 10 pals.
You'll also have to repeat each sentence twice.
The Pronunciations scheme is only available in the US right now, but this could expand in the future.
To qualify, you'll need to be aged 18 or over, and have more than 75 Facebook friends.
How much will Facebook pay for voice recordings?
Sadly, the pay-out isn't huge.
Completing a single set of recordings earns you 200 points inside the app.
You'll need to earn at least 1,000 points to cash out via PayPal.
And 1,000 points is only worth a $5 reward.
The good news is that Viewpoints will also let you earn points through other activities.
And more payment schemes will likely be added to Viewpoints over time.
