Gamers fume after sold-out PS5 appears on eBay for £250 above the asking price
GAMERS across the globe were left high and dry this morning after pre-orders for the new PlayStation console sold out within minutes.
The PlayStation 5 isn't out until November but a handful of stores opened up orders on Thursday, sparking a furious scramble for the machine online.
PS5 listings have already begun to pop up on sites like eBay for as much as £250 above the asking price.
Crestfallen PlayStation fans took to social media to vent their frustrations at missing out.
"So did anyone manage to pre order a PS5? F*****g thing sold out everywhere in about 30 seconds," one Twitter user asked.
Another fumed: "PS5 is completely sold out for australia and i literally had no chance to get it. now no stock until 2021. f**k."
Japanese tech titan Sony announced it was working on the PS5 last year but waited until Wednesday to reveal the console's price and release date.
Two versions of the machine will hit shelves in the US, South Korea and other markets on November 12, followed by the UK a week later.
Pre-orders for the £449 console went live on Thursday at major retailers including Amazon, Walmart and Best Buy. Stocks are reported to have run dry within an hour.
It's not clear when the PS5 will be restocked.
On Twitter, one eagle-eyed user discovered a listing for a PlayStation 5 on eBay charging people £700 for the sought-after gaming machine.
The seller claims they're based in the UK and that the console will be shipped on release day.
It's one of dozens of PS5 listings to have popped up on second-hand sales sites since Thursday morning.
"PS5 preorders going well I see, already all over ebay and sold out in most places before breakfast was finished," one Twitter user quipped.
There's no way to verify what proportion of the posts are legitimate.
Some may be attempting to scam desperate gamers willing to pay well above the asking price.
It's likely that major retailers will have restocked the PlayStation 5 in the coming weeks, so don't panic just yet.
Keep an eye on the retail websites if you're keen to bag one, and sign up to be notified when stocks are replenished.
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X – when are they out and how much will they cost?
Microsoft has confirmed that the new Xbox Series X and its smaller, cheaper sibling, the Series S, will launch on November 10.
The release date covers the UK, US, Australia and a bunch of other countries worldwide.
The disc-free Series S will cost £249/$299, while the Xbox Series X comes in at £449/$499.
So how does that compare to the new Xbox's biggest rival, the PlayStation 5?
Sony has revealed the PS5 release date falls on November 12, but not everywhere.
That date only stands for the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea.
In the UK, you won’t be able to get it until November 19.
The PS5 proper will cost £449.99/$499.99, while the digital edition comes in at £359/$399.
The PS5 is the successor to the PS4 and PS4 Pro, and will be available in two distinct versions.
Those are the pricey PS5 proper with all the bells and whistles, and the digital edition, which is cheaper but with lower specs and no disc tray.
Both consoles will offer gorgeous 8K graphics, rapid loading times and an impressive roster of launch games.
They'll be going head-to-head with Microsoft's next-gen consoles, the £449 Xbox Series X and £249 Xbox Series S.
Like Sony, Microsoft has opted to launch two machines: A full-works console with a higher price tag and a cheaper one without a disc tray.
