What’s the difference between the Nintendo Switch and the Switch OLED?

As the name suggests, the chief difference between the two Nintendo models is the OLED screen that’s being introduced.

OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology is something you’ll mostly find in high-end televisions and flagship smartphones.

Rather than rely on an LCD backlight, these cutting-edge displays each feature pixels of light that are self-illuminating. You can check out our OLED explainer for more.

In the new Switch, this will offer a far superior visual experience for gameplay.

The new version of the Nintendo Switch is now available to buy – it was released on Friday October 8 2021.

For those gamers out there who pre-ordered, that was also the earliest dispatch date.

What is the Nintendo Switch OLED?

The Nintendo Switch OLED is an updated version of the original console, which was released back in 2017.

While the internet has been buzzing with rumours of a whole new console – the Nintendo Switch Pro – getting released in 2021, this is a somewhat softer proposition.

The OLED model of the Switch isn’t a huge evolutionary leap for Nintendo – but there are some significant differences between the old and new models.

Read on to find out more about the Nintendo Switch OLED’s features and specs, and how it differs to the original Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo Switch OLED price

The Nintendo Switch OLED costs $349.99 in the US and £309.99 in the UK, although retailer prices may vary.

The older-generation Switch, by contrast, across most retailers – the question is: how much cheaper will it get when the OLED version comes out?

Nintendo Switch OLED specs

The new Nintendo Switch has screen that’s larger than its predecessor, measuring 7 inches inches across and with a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution.

There’s also a wired LAN port for much better online play, something that we think is going to bring a huge chance with it.

Plus, the Nintendo Switch OLED offers 64GB of storage: that’s double that of the original Switch.

There are all-new white Joy-Con controllers on the way too (for new exclusively available with the new Switch), plus a new kickstand for tabletop gaming.

Will the Nintendo Switch OLED be on sale for Black Friday?

We know plenty of gamers out there would love to see the new Switch include in the late-November sales madness of Black Friday – but being honest, that’s unlikely.

However, bargain-hunters can take consolation in the fact that the old Switch will likely see its price reduced when Black Friday comes around.

And if not, we’ll almost definitely see bundle prices on the non-OLED Switch and games brought down in cost.
