Apple has long been rumoured to have a headset in development.

It's expected to offer virtual reality (immersing you in a virtual world) and augmented reality (overlaying computer images on the real world).

Rivals have already stormed ahead with similar goggles.

The Google Glass has been out for years, while Facebook has been widely praised for its Oculus Quest 2 headset.

Microsoft has also pushed ahead with its HoloLens augmented reality glasses, targeting businesses rather than consumers.

Sony has just unveiled a PSVR 2 headset for its PS5, and HTC offers the powerful Vive kit.

Now Apple is tipped to join the fray with a headset later this year.

According to top Apple insider Ming-Chi Kuo, the headset will be out in 2022.

But stock will "ramp up" in the first part of 2023, according to an investor note seen by .

The TF International Securities analyst says that the headset will feature two "3P pancake lenses".

These are said to have a folded design to let light reflect between the display and lenses.

According to Kuo, this will allow for a smaller and lighter-weight headset.

So how much will it cost?

Kuo doesn't say in his new note, but previous estimates have marked the headset as retailing for thousands of dollars.

That would be well above the cost of something like the $299/£299 Oculus Quest 2.

It would potentially cost the same as a HTC Vive and a high-powered gaming PC to power it.

What's also unclear is whether the Apple headset will contain its own computing power – or rely on another device.

If it does cost thousands of dollars, computing will almost certainly be done on the device.

However, it's possible that some tasks may require an iPhone – as is the case with other Apple accessories.

Sadly, Apple hasn't confirmed any such device, so don't hold your breath.
