BAD STREAM

All the Netflix TV shows and movies you’re banned from watching with new Basic plan

IF you love comedy classics like Happy Gilmore, American Pie and Mr Bean's Holiday, you might want to think twice before signing up to Netflix's new Basic plan.

The streaming giant has been forced to block loads of popular shows and movies for anyone on its ad-supported subscription which launched at the start of November.

Stuff not available with ads come up with a padlock

And it's not just comedy fans who may notice missing favourites.

Hit US series including The Office (US), Suits, House of Cards, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Superstore, The Good Place and Homeland are locked too.

Netflix warned at launch that some stuff might not be available to watch with the Basic with ads plan because of "licensing restrictions".

While subscribers on other plans can continue to access the full catalogue, those with the new ad-supported option see a padlock instead.

The firm has told The Sun it is working on resolving these restrictions.

It claims titles that are available represent on average from 85 to 95 per cent of viewing depending on the country.

Other big name movies absent include The Wolf Of Wall Street, Fifty Shades Of Grey and Inglourious Basterds.

And the entire film series of big franchises like The Hobbit, Hunger Games and America Pie are completely missing too.

Netflix tends to hide locked titles from view on its main screen, unless one is in the top ten.

People are more likely to get a nasty surprise when searching for something - especially if they've downgraded from another subscription tier and know that title to be on Netflix.

This means users miss out on current top ten hits Minions and More 2, Sing and Motherland.

Netflix Basic with ads is the company's new cheap option, costing £4.99 / $6.99.

Aside from some content not being available, the other big difference is the ads themselves.

Netflix says viewers can expect to see an average of about four minutes of ads per hour.

But a recent test by The Sun found the ads to not be that intrusive - find out about it here.

Another big difference is you can only get a maximum of 720p video quality, as well as only being able to use the account to watch from one screen at a time.
