THREADS users can finally delete their account without losing their Instagram too.

The Twitter / X rival burst onto the scene in July and quickly attracted millions of downloads.

But people had the nasty surprise of finding out they couldn't get rid of the new Threads app.

Not without losing Instagram anyway.

Meta - which owns Instagram and Threads - initially said this was deliberate because "your Threads profile is part of your Instagram account".

Months later, the company has finally decided to come up with a way to let users delete their Threads account without losing Instagram too.

Instagram boss Adam Mosseri posted on the platform that it made the change "based on feedback from our Threads community".

How to delete my Threads account

Note that the ability to delete your Threads account is rolling out, so it may not appear on your app straight away.

To delete your Threads account, open the Threads app and go to your profile page.

Tap the two-lined button in the top right to open Settings.

Select Account.

Choose Delete or Deactivate Profile, followed by Delete.

To deactivate your Threads account, open the Threads app and head to your profile page.

Select the two-lined button in the top right for Settings.

Tap on Account.

Then choose Delete or Deactivate Profile, followed by Deactivate.
