“Currently stuck at 40 Mbps, but that is not enough to stream Atmos content,” the Reddit user said.

Nearly all Wi-Fi routers use two different frequencies or communication bands: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

40 Mbps typically runs on a 2.4 GHz frequency, which is good for smart home devices such as sockets, fans, or printers, one Reddit user explained.

For streaming devices, however, it is better to use 5GHz, the user continued.

“Yes, with 5 GHz you should be able to manage several hundred Mbit,” another Reddit user shared.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

The difference between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi comes down to speed and range.

The 2.4 GHz frequency is said to be better for reach, meaning it covers a larger surface area.

This band is better at penetrating solid objects – this is helpful if you have large furniture around your router.

However, compared to 5 GHz, the frequency has a lower data rate, which means it’s slower.

This is also the case because this band is more prone to interference and more devices usually use this frequency.

The 5 GHz frequency is better for speed as it features a higher data rate.

In contrast to 2.4 GHz, it is less prone to interference, covers a smaller surface area, and is worse at penetrating solid objects.

HOW TO MODIFY YOUR SETTINGS

It’s easy to change your Wi-Fi’s frequency via your router’s Settings.

Typically, you can type in your router’s IP Address on a browser, go to the Wireless setting, and then select Channels.
