ONE of the highest-rated games of last year is not any of the big names you will initially think of.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Resident Evil 4, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom were all excellent games from 2023.
However, a small indie game managed to hold its own, scoring a huge 90 rating on review aggregate site Metacritic.
Slay the Princess was one of the stand out successes of last year and was a refreshing change from all the triple-A hits.
It’s a 2D hand-drawn black and white adventure where you are given the task of slaying – not saving – the princess.
However, there are plenty of decisions you can make, and each small one changes the outcome of the story.
More in Steam
It’s a game made to be replayed, and you will complete it many times in the hopes of seeing each very different outcome.
The choices you make are reflected back to you in the way that the other characters change and react.
As it’s made to be played many times, the latest free update is great not only for existing players, but those who are yet to dive in.
The update includes new dialogue options on top of the already beefy story and remixes of popular songs from the Czech National Symphony Orchestra.

Slay the Princess costs £14.99 / $17.99 so it is far cheaper than most of the highly-rated releases.
