GOOGLE Maps has "finally" given navigators with iPhones a feature that Android owners have had for years.

It's been a long time coming, but iOS and CarPlay users will soon be able to use a speedometer and speed limits in Google Maps.

The features first debuted on Android five years ago.

But Google has finally come around to rolling them out to iPhone users globally, TechCrunch first reported.

The speedometer appears in Google Maps once you start navigation, and will show you the vehicles speed in miles or kilometres - depending on where in the world you live.

However, in a support page, Google that the in-app speedometer is for “informational use only".

Maps users should always rely on their vehicle’s speedometer to confirm their actual driving speed.

The speed limit indicator, once enabled, will change colours when you're driving too fast or too slow.

Similarly, Google has cautioned against using the in-app speed limit indicator as gospel.

"External factors may cause the Maps Speedometer to differ from your actual speed," the company writes in its support page.

The tech giant reportedly began testing the features on iOS in India last week.

Google later confirmed that a global roll out was commencing on 9 July, 2024.

"Finally, iOS Google Maps has a live speed limit tracker! I know Android has had it for a while, but yay!," one iPhone user on X (formerly Twitter).

But for others, it's too little, too late.

They have already replaced Google Maps with alternative navigation apps.

"Too late," one onlooker wrote in the comments under a report on .

"I use Yandex Navigation, it's best."

HOW TO TURN ON NEW FEATURES

If you don't see them appear right away, that's fine - you may have to switch them on manually.

First, make sure your Google Maps app is updated to the latest version available in the app store.

Next, open up the app and head into Settings.

You can access Settings by tapping your profile picture in the top right of the screen.

From there, click the Navigation tab and scroll to the Map Display section.

Here you will see options to switch on the speedometer and speed limits features.

If the tabs are blue then they are already enabled.
