Roku gadgets: What's the difference?

Streaming Devices

These are small boxes or sticks that connect to your TVs via an HDMI cable, which gives your old telly all the perks of a smart TV.

Roku TVs

These are TVs from various manufacturers (such as JVC, TCL, Metz and Polaroid) that come with Roku’s operating system built-in.

Roku Streambar

A soundbar that also works as a streaming device.

Free streaming

Roku streaming gadgets can hook any old TV up to the streaming apps you know and love.

But beyond Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ - all of which have raised subscription costs in recent months - there are a number of free streaming apps.

They have a YouTube-style set up where you can watch thousands of TV shows and movies free of charge - if you watch some ads.

Amazon Freevee

Freevee - previously known as IMDb TV - is Amazon's big take on free streaming and it has some big names onboard.

The service has exclusives like Judy Justice and it's the new home of Neighbours too.

Classic shows such as Skins, Parks and Recreation, Hell's Kitchen and Mad Men are also available to watch.

In terms of movies, there are some well-known titles including What Women Want, Curse Of Chucky and Love, Rosie, as well as cult classics like Drive and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

Pluto TV

Pluto TV is mainly focussed on offering live channels similar to traditional TV with ads but there's some on-demand content as well.

It boasts more than 250 channels, with shows like Judge Judy, the CSI franchise and South Park.

The apps sorts content into themed channels like Sitcoms, Paranormal, Kids and Sports.

The best part? You don't even need to sign up - you can watch it straight away.
