The first official images of the Switch 2 have been revealed

NINTENDO has been teasing an official trailer for the Switch 2 since May 2024, and the wait is finally over.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa officially announced a successor to the Nintendo Switch in May via a few tweets.

Furukawa-san said that the console people colloquially call the Switch 2 is officially in development and will be revealed shortly.

An exact date for the Switch 2’s reveal was not given, but he did provide us with a release window for the announcement.

Nintendo confirmed that the Switch 2 would be revealed before the end of the fiscal year.

This means that the first official look at the console had to be before April 1, 2025.

More in Nintendo

Over the next few months, Nintendo revealed little about the Switch 2 except to tell us where it wouldn’t be appearing.

However, more tweets from Furukawa-san also officially announced that the Switch 2 will have full backwards compatibility with Switch games including Switch Online.

Nintendo has just released a teaser trailer showing off the Switch 2, confirming the name and some features that were shown in leaks.

The Switch 2 will have a black design with the classic red and blue highlights, and feature new Joy-Con controllers with magnetic connectors and what looks like an optical sensor.

The trailer confirms that the screen will be slightly larger, and that most physical Switch games will be playable on the next generation console.

Nintendo also announced the release date for a Nintendo Direct where we will find out more about the Nintendo Switch 2.

A Switch 2 Direct will take place on April 2, 2025, which is when we expect to find out the specs, release date, and price.

Nintendo will also allow fans to try out the Switch 2 for the first time by signing up to Switch 2 experiences.

A hands-on event will take place in London from April 11 until April 13

The trailer also shows a new Mario Kart game featuring new Mario models that we expect to be a Switch 2 launch title.

Some third-party studios already began confirming that their games were being developed for unannounced Nintendo hardware.

Yooka Laylee remake, Yooka Replaylee, and My Time At Portia sequel, My Time at Evershine both confirmed their launches on a future Nintendo console believed to be the Switch 2.
