POKE IN THE EYE

This new Facebook Messenger update is going to make chatting to your pals REALLY irritating

First they forced us to install Messenger as a new app... and now we have to put up with THIS?

PREPARE for a wave of annoying adverts in your Facebook chats.

The social network is trialling advert pop-ups in its Messenger communications app.

Facebook said yesterday that it was trying out advertising on the app so it can cash in on the popular chat service.

Messenger boasts 1.2 billion monthly users.

The ads will pop up on the homepage where you can see all your conversations in a list.

Clicking will take you to the brand's website or to a chat window where you can talk to an automated salesperson (which means a robot).

Businesses can already chat with Messenger users using the app.

Founder Mark Zuckerberg owns Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp.

The latter is the only social media service that doesn't show ads - for now.

It's not the only app that's bombarding us with manipulating ad campaigns.

Snapchatters should prepare for a deluge of branding and promotions splashed across their smartphones thanks to a new update.

The photo app now lets you add links to websites in Snapchat pics - which means celebs are likely to ramp up their "#ad" ventures.

That means stars will be waving their whitening toothpaste and lax-i-tea along with a link to buy them.
