Twitter DOUBLES the length of tweets to 280 characters so you don’t have to cram everything in 140 characters
TWITTER has granted everyone the ability to write 280 character Tweets.
In September, the social network gave a selected group of users the ability to write longer tweets, but this feature how now been rolled out to the masses.
Starting from this evening, the character limit will be incresed to 280 characters.
Twitter previously prided itself on its limit, which forced people to edit their views and opinions and think hard about getting it all in.
But it noticed that people were giving up on Tweets when they couldn't cram the right words together.
To try and get more people Tweeting, it had a cunning plan.
Picked at random, it granted five percent of its users to 280 character tweets.
You might recoil in horror at the thought of giving the most vocal people on the web even more space to rant and rave.
But Twitter said that in its initial tests, most people had only gone a little bit over 140 characters and didn't use the maximum limit.
In a blog post, Aliza Rozen, product manager at Twitter, wrote: "During the first few days of the test many people Tweeted the full 280 limit because it was new and novel, but soon after behaviour normalised.
"We saw when people needed to use more than 140 characters, they Tweeted more easily and more often.
"But importantly, people Tweeted below 140 most of the time and the brevity of Twitter remained."
Only five percent of Tweets sent were longer than 140 characters and only two percent were over 190 characters.

"As a result, your timeline reading experience should not substantially change, you’ll still see about the same amount of Tweets in your timeline.
"For reference, in the timeline, Tweets with an image or poll usually take up more space than a 190 character Tweet," Rozen added.
